Duties and Responsibilities
• Review new and renewal business underwriting referrals. Provide feedback, guidance and decision, or timely referral to next level of authority.
• Review and approve terms & conditions/policy language submitted as referrals for case underwriting and/or Product Development; providing feedback, amendments and guidance
• Identify, recommend, develop and publish Underwriting Guidelines and Best Practice documents
• Lead underwriting manual development, updates & improvements
• Collaborate with Actuarial team on Rating tool development; conduct review sessions as required with key stakeholders to identify areas of improvement, training needs, utilization improvement, etc.
• Work with Actuarial and Portfolio Management colleagues on individual account rate adequacy; appropriate analysis and action plans to improve segment performance as well as other key risk characteristics
• Assist Head of Specialty and Sponsor Solutions – Accident and Health:
◦ Identifying training needs of personnel
◦ Oversee and assist in the creation of underwriting case studies
◦ Articulation of risk appetite and application at region level while contemplating unique market practices and history
◦ Review and track state compliance with underwriting standards including adherence to improvement plans and underwriting audit action plans
◦ Regular reporting to executive management
◦ Support field underwriting teams in achievement of shared goals and execution of strategic initiatives
◦ Provide thought leadership, and where appropriate, feedback on performance of field underwriters
◦ Other duties as required
Position Requirements:
Qualifications and Candidate Traits
• 15 years Accident & Health underwriting experience including underwriting Group Personal Accident, Corporate Travel, Specialty Markets and Supplemental Health.
• Strong decision making ability with capacity to balance underwriting standards with market demands
• Strong technical underwriting skills including:
◦ Large case underwriting
◦ Logical analysis
◦ Coherent documentation of decisions
◦ Knowledge of rate plans and basic rate analysis
◦ Portfolio Management skills including P&L management, segment analysis and developing fact-based recommendations
◦ Product Development expertise
◦ Managing challenging accounts
◦ Working with the unique demands & practices of multiple distribution channels
◦ Understanding and operating within Regulatory/Legal constraints
◦ Knowledge of Direct Marketing programs including metric analysis, deal structure, profitability analysis and Individual products used in DM programs
◦ Recent management/supervisory experience; preference for experience in matrix reporting environments
◦ Experience developing policy wording and understanding of Underwriting’s role in product development
◦ Ability to use influence to implement decisions and enforce company policies and practices
◦ Strategic thinking ability, sound judgment and proven execution skills
◦ Intellectual curiosity, creativity and natural desire to remain informed of issues that may impact the industry, clients and risk exposure
◦ Ability to work in a complex, change-oriented organization with multiple stakeholders and maintain ego resilience
◦ Strong customer service ethic and sound understanding of business processes
◦ Excellent written & verbal skills
◦ Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office products; particularly Excel and PowerPoint
◦ Strong knowledge of US market desired
◦ Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent
