Description
UX Product Designer - Solaria Labs (Emerging Technology)
Advance your Career at Solaria Labs, a Liberty Mutual Endeavor
The economy is being transformed: self-driving cars, connected homes and devices, on-demand ‘gig’ labor, and an ever-changing set of start-up competitors are completely changing business models across industries. In response, Liberty Mutual has established Solaria Labs, an innovation center dedicated to building and launching disruptive new products for the insurance industry and beyond.
Solaria Labs is a hybrid of an innovation lab and startup incubator: when successful, we will spin off new companies or create new lines of business within Liberty Mutual. We’ve already launched a few products and one company since we started — for examples, see www.totalhomescore.com, powered by our ShineAPI developers.solarialabs.com, and www.gigupjobs.com. We also focus on applying emerging technologies like machine learning and telematics to improve our insurance-focused business operations. As part of a Fortune 100 company, we have a lot of data to work with and opportunities to improve the lives of thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of customers!
In Solaria Labs, we have been building a team of innovators who are passionate about technology, entrepreneurial, willing to experiment with the latest open source technologies, and excited about building new products from scratch. We value people from diverse backgrounds who can bring new perspectives to our work. We’re still growing fast, looking for like-minded people to join our lab in Boston’s Back Bay. Our work has a global reach, fostering innovation at Liberty Mutual operations in South America, Europe, and Asia; we also provide opportunities for temporary assignments to these locations and our lab in Singapore.
As a UX Product Designer in Solaria Labs, you will be responsible for the end-to-end user experience research, design, and testing for one or more products. This might mean that you’re given a brand-new concept that’s been initially validated with consumer research and be asked to develop a brand and creative identity in collaboration with our marketing team. In other cases, you might start with an existing initial design concept and flesh it out into a full-fledged UX/UI, helping software developers by providing build-ready assets or coding HTML/CSS yourself. Additionally, you’ll be expected to support digital marketing efforts for the lab by creating still images, video collateral, and print marketing materials. We’re looking for strong starters who place less emphasis on planning and more emphasis on building.
About the job:
• User Experience: Leverage Agile, design-thinking, Lean UX, and industrial design methodologies to help re-imagine new human-centered user experiences, products and services through collaborative problem solving with a multidisciplinary team.
• User Research and Testing: Lead initial customer journey research and testing as needed, and/or expand upon existing insights by creating journey maps, customer personas, interaction and architecture flows, etc. Create additional user and usability testing as needed throughout product lifecycle to ensure that product design is solving problems in an enjoyable way.
• Design Thinking and Planning: Lead and facilitate design thinking workshops and act as a liaison between the business and development sides of the lab to ensure that all parties are speaking a common language to benefit the customer.
• Visual Design: Ensure that the look, feel, layout and interaction details of your products meet customer needs and deliver against business objectives. Develop and contribute to wireframes, journey maps, user personas, and interactive prototypes.
• Prototyping: Develop and iterate on concepts for web and mobile browser experiences in a fast-paced team environment. Rapidly refine designs, considering live customer data, market research, and usability studies. This includes creating rough conceptual sketches to convey ideas (you know when it doesn’t have to be pixel perfect), and creating prototypes for concept testing and to validate hypotheses before solutions are built.
• Front-end coding: Collaborate closely with web developers, communicating design specs and collaborating on UI patterns. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about best practices in standards-compliant markup, CSS, HTML 5, JavaScript, and progressive enhancement.
Desired skills:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience, as well as a minimum of 5+ years of experience in mobile-focused web and application design as evidenced by an up-to-date online portfolio.
• Experience creating marketing collateral (particularly video and print) as evidenced by portfolio.
• Familiarity with methodologies including Agile, design thinking, Lean UX, and Lean Startup.
• Familiarity with the following core disciplines, with demonstrated proficiency in at least three: information architecture, visual design, UX design, prototyping, front-end development, user research and/or experiment design, content strategy, and video production. Ideal candidate has experience in mobile, responsive web design and front-end coding (CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript).
• Experience with rapid prototyping using tools such as InVision, Adobe XD, or designing directly in code; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Ability to present projects and status reports to team leadership. Strong organization and analytic thinking skills, with ability to translate content into user scenarios, flows and diagrams.
• Proven track record of collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
