Position Overview
The VP, Head of Operations, Planning, and Technology is a key leader, responsible for execution of the strategy for Investments’ operations and IT infrastructure as well as developing a vision for the future of the platform. The incumbent is responsible for the following functional areas: Investment Operations, Investment Management Systems Administration, Investment Risk and Quantitative Analysis, Derivatives, Compliance and Reporting. The incumbent is a member of the Investment Leadership Team and the Investment Management Committee.
Responsibilities
• Manage the Investment Operations team of eleven individuals who are responsible for all operational aspects of the $50 billion general account and third-party capital initiatives. Support new business initiatives and optimize processes and staffing.
• Manage the Investment Risk and Quantitative Analysis and Reporting teams. These teams consists of a team of seven individuals responsible for risk measurement and reporting, investment performance and attribution, quantitative analysis, and investment reporting.
• Manage the Investment Management Systems Administration team, which consists of two individuals. Responsible for vendor management and ensuring systems are operating as functionally needed, and works to ensure all systems are fully utilized. Approves requests and cost justification for system enhancements. Prepares forward looking plans for anticipated investment system requirements and updates.
• Manage the Derivatives team of four individuals and development of Findur derivatives platform.
• Ensure new investments systems are being adequately supported by IT. Also responsible for determining necessary system enhancements, and ensuring effective implementation.
• Manage the Compliance team, which ensures all investment mandates are compliant with defined parameters. Includes monitoring consolidated, legal, and individual transaction investment policy statements.
• Direct various planning activities such as investment income planning, expense budgeting, analysis of business costs and assessing Investments value proposition.
• Contribute to investment strategy, risk parameters, and portfolio analysis on in-force portfolios.
• CRO of investment operations risk within ERM framework.
• Responsible for designing, documenting, implementing, and testing Investments’ Business Continuity Plan. Manage periodic tests to ensure readiness.
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or related field or equivalent related work experience
• 15+ years relevant work experience in the financial services or investment management field.
• 15+ years management experience
• Experience with investment management systems and IT
Preferred:
• Master’s Degree, MBA, CFA Charterholder, or CPA
• Degree or background in industrial engineering, operations research, or computer science
• Familiarity with any of BlackRock Aladdin, Findur, FrontInvest, Markit EDM
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required:
• Expert knowledge of finance, budgeting, investment management, internal controls, and risk management.
• Advanced skills in financial and managerial reporting for external needs (SEC) and internal (Board and management).
• Advanced knowledge of asset/liability management in an insurance context
• Advanced knowledge of fixed income markets including corporate bonds, ABS, MBS, CMBS, high yield, emerging markets, commercial mortgage loans, private placements and alternative investments
• Expert knowledge of investment management systems, including trade order management, fixed income analytics and compliance
• Expert ability in implementing change, ensuring understanding, participation and ownership.
• Exceptional oral and written communication, presentation and training skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates
• Advanced ability to analyze and improve business processes, adapt new methods, work under tight deadlines and stressful conditions
• Expert skills in managing multiple tasks, projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities and ability delegate key areas of responsibility
• Skill in customer relationship management and change management; and expert ability to foster a teamwork and customer service focused environment.
• Expert persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers to resolve issues/problems
• Expert investigative, analytical and problem solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources
