Job Summary
• Conducts underwriting activities in all areas with underwriting authority to monitor compliance with all underwriting guidelines and methods as established, communicates findings and makes recommendations for correction.
• Consults Product Management on underwriting issues, using research and review of risk characteristics.
• Provides internal and external training of areas with underwriting authority.
• Assures compliance with state and applicable federal rules, regulations and activities as required.
Essential Job Functions
• Consults with the Product Management department on all underwriting related issues concerning products, markets, geophysical characteristics, risk characteristics, etc.
• Manages underwriting activities and exposures in catastrophe and other high risk areas.
• Monitors compliance of underwriting policy through: Control of the quality of production via scheduled product and quality audits of all areas having underwriting authority.
• Training of producers and line underwriting areas on company underwriting guidelines and policy.
• Identifying reinsurance exposures and activities needed to meet company policy.
• Evaluating bordereaux and conversions of business.
• Developing recommended levels of underwriting authority for line underwriting personnel and procedures.
• Conducting underwriting participation in policy or forms rewrites.
• Responsible for underwriting analysis of assigned states for all products, in coordination with product review schedule, with recommended actions presented to appropriate user (i.e., line underwriting, Product Management, sales, etc.).
• Develops competitor information regarding underwriting activities, and consults with the competitor intelligence team.
• Maintains and updates underwriting manuals for risk selection standards and related procedures.
• Responsible for review of losses by state to determine the why of loss situations and develops recommended plans and procedures to correct any deficient areas.
• Works with development of underwriting systems, information and inspection reports.
• Maintains and manages state regulatory activities such as: windpools, assigned risk/JUA pools, etc.
• Conducts external seminars for various groups and agents regarding risk management and other underwriting issues.
Physical Actions
Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 10 lbs. maximum, and seeing.
Physical Environment
Required job duties are normally performed in a climate controlled office environment.
Education Requirements
4 year college degree preferred. Seven parts CPCU preferred; or a minimum of 1 year college credits and CPCU designation desired.
Experience Requirements
Minimum of 8 years insurance/underwriting experience.
Special Skill Requirement
Ability to utilize keyboard.
