The Role
As a Life Underwriting Director, you will have the responsibility of underwriting individual life insurance applications within your designated approval limit of up to $20,000,000 in death benefit up to age 85 on a cross functional Underwriting & New Business team. You will provide subject matter expertise on life underwriting assignments and projects. You will adhere to medical, non-medical and financial guidelines while determining an individual's insurability while evaluating and assessing complex risk to determine whether to accept an insurance application and determine appropriate coverage.
Responsibilities
• Evaluates and underwrites life insurance applications making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within your designated approval limit of $20,000,000 to age 85
• Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background
• Enhances departmental outcomes by sharing knowledge with team members and providing advice on complex underwriting determinations
• Identifies trends and issues and offers solutions on complex issues, including appeals and exceptions to meet customer needs while ensuring alignment to business strategies
• Takes ownership of highly complex case load to proactively communicate with customer and other departments to enhance relationships and facilitate placement of highly visible business
• Provides second signature reviews for any level underwriter for all amounts up to and including their maximum designated approval limit of $20,000,000
• Designs and leads effective presentations for customers and distribution partners
• Represents the company at industry and customer meetings
• Negotiates sensitive, high-impact underwriting decisions with key distribution partners
• Leads project teams
• Mentors underwriting team members and serves as a subject matter expert in one or more financial and/or medical topics related to underwriting and risk assessment; conducts trainings and/or prepares written documentation in field of expertise
Education
• Undergraduate degree or 4+ years of comparable work experience
• Industry Exams - FLMI, FALU, CLU designations and EKG certifications preferred
Experience
• 10+ years of experience underwriting individual Life Insurance / Life Underwriting including medical, non-medical and financial risk selection
• Demonstrated Excellence in: Influencing Others; Risk Assessment; Decision making using sound judgment; Negotiation Skills; Managing Conflict; analyzing and interpreting complex financial documents including profit/loss statements, income statements, and balance sheets; Estate Growth Calculations and Life Expectancy Calculations; Complex Medical Topics; Complex Financials/IOLI; Subject Matter Expert in one area of Industry Interest
• Developed Skills in: Innovative & Strategic Thinking; being a Subject Matter Expert in multiple Areas of Industry Interest
• Confident, Comfortable Communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
• Intermediate in: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
• A demonstrated track record of working with minimal supervision, being a self-starter and working with others in a team environment
