Summary
Working under the direction of portfolio managers and senior investment staff, incumbents assist in trading, monitoring, portfolio construction, risk and allocation aspects of client asset management; conduct associated research studies; and building/refining related models.
Portfolio Trading:
• Assists with day-to-day management of numerous fund and portfolio accounts. This would typically include cash management, futures management, and security trade management. It would not include actual trade execution (which is provided by the Equity Trading group).
• Assists with portfolio construction team with feedback regarding the current trading environment. Some of this information is based on trading observations in the current market and some is based on conversations with the trading desk.
• Assists with development of expertise in the use of various derivative instruments (typically, ETFs, futures, options, and swaps) as alternative ways to get market exposures rather than utilizing just securities.
• Works with research team during development of new trading techniques.
Research:
• Assists with research and development of quantitative alpha models. These models are usually quite complex and utilize data and applications from numerous external providers as well as proprietary data and processes.
• Assists with quantitative research based on original ideas and ideas from academia and third-party sources. Academic and third-party ideas typically come from interactions at conferences, professional meetings, professional journals, and published research papers.
• Works with portfolio construction team during development of new construction techniques.
• Works with portfolio management/trading team during development of new trading techniques.
Portfolio Construction:
• Provides ongoing and proactive analysis and monitoring of the risk-based characteristics of supported portfolios, including scenario analyses of the impacts of potential changes to portfolio construction.
• Assists with portfolio construction based on output from various alpha models. Currently, this includes alpha models based on factors, analyst price targets, and market beta/volatility. Other alpha models are likely to be included in the future.
• Assists with equity market analysis and economic analysis to be used during portfolio construction and to be provided to senior investment management as needed.
• Assists with the development and maintenance of strategic allocations for multi-asset class products. Currently this includes the Asset Allocation funds/portfolios, Equity Income Plus fund/portfolio, Diversified Income Plus fund/portfolio, and Worldwide fund/portfolio. Also performs attribution analysis on the multi-asset class products, as needed.
• Works with research team during development of new portfolio construction techniques.
• Coordinates management of constructed portfolios with portfolio management/trading team.
Required Job Qualifications
• Minimum education: Bachelor's degree in a financial or technical field
• Preferred education: Master degree in a financial or technical field.
• Other relevant credentials (preferred, but not required) may include CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CQF (Certificate in Quantitative Finance), FRM (Financial Risk Manager), and CERA (Charted Enterprise Risk Analyst).
• Typically have 4 or more years of investment experience (over 2 years of experience for Master degrees, CFAs, CQFs, FRMs, or CERAs).
