Global Portfolio Accounting is responsible for performing accounting and fund administration for the investment portfolios available to American Funds’ shareholders and institutional investors. The work performed in this department is accounting at its core with a strong finance focus. Not only does this group calculate Net Asset Values, but they are involved with launching new funds, implementing new share classes, and establishing new systems to streamline and enhance the business. Global Portfolio Accounting is one of the largest departments in Investment Operations, consisting of 8 functional areas, each with unique capabilities and services: Portfolio Accounting Client Team, Accounting Control Team, Complex Accounting Team, Accounting Distribution and Pricing Team, Treasurer Office, Tax Team, Reporting Team, and Knowledge Management. Associates within Global Portfolio Accounting have the opportunity to rotate among the 8 functional areas over time according to business needs, performance, individual interests, and technical skillsets.
As a Senior Tax Associate based in Norfolk, VA you will be placed within the Tax Team. You will be responsible for the quality and accuracy of your team’s deliverables including tax accounting and reporting for U.S. and non-U.S. investment vehicles. Your scope of responsibility ranges from performing these activities to validating them through controls, ensuring compliance with procedures and best practices.
Responsibilities:
• Gather and analyze information for preparation of supporting tax documentation with increasing complexity
• Determine appropriate action to resolve exceptions between internal and external systems
• Prepare, review, and reconcile tax reports, documents, and respond to ad hoc requests
• Act as a technical resource to new associates
• Perform self-review and peer review
• Identify/assess business risk
• Serve as liaison between internal and external business partners (i.e., auditors, consultants, custodian banks)
• Collaborates with associates to identify and implement process improvements and automated solutions to workflows
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business is required; CPA, MBT, or concentration in tax is preferred
• 1+ years tax, accounting, finance, or industry experience
• Proficient in Microsoft Office with a strong ability to learn various accounting related systems; interest in automated solutions preferred
• Attention to detail and demonstrated accuracy in a deadline driven environment
• Passion for problem solving and multi-tasking
• Flexibility to work overtime as needed
