Director of Security and Life Safety
Category: Security Life Safety Program – Property Management, the Americas
Position Purpose
The Director of Security and Life Safety will provide strategic leadership in the design and development of security and life safety strategies, programs and policies that minimize risk. This position will provide leadership, counsel and direction to align and coordinate security and life safety processes and programs. This position will also lead in the areas of security and life safety expertise, direction and guidance on security and life safety related matters to the management team and to corporate leadership as requested.
Principal Accountabilities
• Provide guidance and counsel in designing, implementing and maintaining a security and life safety programs and organization
• Manages strategic alignment, collaboration and coordination of security and life safety processes
• Provide leadership in establishing minimum security and life safety standards and protocols
• Provide tenant employee and visitor security life safety, building and equipment security life safety policies and procedures
• Facilitates the development of consistent delivery/deployment strategies for security and life safety processes within the property complex
• Establishes effective and consistent security and life safety performance measurement systems and communication protocols
Key Responsibilities
• Provide leadership in the development of security and life safety standards, systems, processes and best practices
• Develops effective policies, programs and measurement tools to enable and maintain the highest levels of security and life safety performance and compliance
• Collaborates with property management, legal, risk management, human resources and media relations to resolve security and life safety related matters and issues when necessary
• Leads or supports investigations of security and life safety related issues
• Assembles appropriate resources to address security and life safety concerns or crisis situations
• Keeps senior management apprised of potential risks and response plans
• Proactively communicates critical security and life safety information to property management, corporate leadership and ownership in a timely manner
• Develops and maintains an effective working partnership with federal, state and local law enforcement, fire and emergency agencies
• Manages the security and life safety budget to reduce costs and gain efficiencies in security life safety services
• Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with regulatory agencies, industry security and life safety professionals, vendors and suppliers
• Provides security and life safety expertise, training, resources and materials.
Operational Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide overall direction and leadership to the security team to ensure that they provide, high levels of quality service to all tenants and visitors in a friendly and professional manner
• Ensure that all security policies and procedures are adhered to by all security team members and the requirements of the security contract are met by the security contractor
• Develop, maintain and update the property emergency response programs and ensure that the property team and tenants are prepared to handle any emergency
• Develop, maintain and update the 4SIGHTez emergency response plan
• Conduct tabletop exercises refining the management team’s response to emergency situations and that tenant fire brigade teams are properly trained for a fire emergency
• Establish and maintain a comprehensive security life safety training program
• Develop, maintain and update a business continuity plan to ensure a well organized recovery during and after an emergency crisis situation
• Conduct semi-annual fire drills and evacuation exercises in collaboration with the Chicago Fire Department
• Provide direction and oversight to the security services provider operation
• Prepare and submit security incident reports in compliance with management, ownership, and insurance carrier requirements
• Provide constructive feedback and coaching throughout the year to help the Security Service Partners Account Manager achieve performance objectives
• Share security life safety best practices and benchmarking with other properties
• Obtain necessary security training and certification to be a top security life safety professional
• Participate on the BOMA/Chicago Security Committee
• Maintain membership in the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) organization
• Effectively manage operating costs related to security life safety operations
• Develop a comprehensive annual detailed budget for the security and life safety program
• Develop a comprehensive detailed long-term capital budget for the security and life safety program
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security, Business/Management or related field
• Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation through ASIS
• 10+ years of security and life safety management experience required
• Thorough working knowledge of security and life safety concepts, practices and procedures
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, laws, and regulations applicable to a security and life safety program
• Proficient with physical security design, development and implementation
• Experienced in the investigation of internal and external crime
• Sound business skills such as budgeting, strategic planning and good decision making ability
• Proven success meeting tight deadlines and working in a fast paced environment
• Must demonstrate the ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
• Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated ability to solve problems
• Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented
• Experience with contract and vendor negotiations
• Maintains confidentiality concerning all information and projects
• Certified Fire Life Safety Director with the Chicago Fire Department
