Job Description
The Sr. Employee Relations (ER) Specialist reports directly to a Manager or Sr. Manager of ER for their location, is responsible for day-to-day ER activities and may represent an ER Manger or Sr. Manager in their location in his or her absence. This role is mainly responsible for assisting in the implementation of ER strategies, programs and policies which promote productive and positive relationships between managers, employees and co-workers by helping to prevent and resolve issues between individuals. Is also responsible for following ER related policies and procedures in a consistent and expedient manner to ensure that employees are treated fairly and actions taken are in compliance with Company policy and government regulations. In addition to handling day-to-day ER matters, will also help to educate appropriate audiences with the goal of minimizing legal risk and preventing the unfair treatment of employees. Will be involved in and may lead ER projects.
Skills
Is responsible for carrying out the following specific activities: providing advice and guidance to managers to address employee performance and conduct issues, including guidance, review and approval of corrective actions (involving: performance improvement plans, formal counselings and warnings, and recommendations for termination); handling AUP violations; internal fraud risk assessments; addressing domestic violence situations; providing advice and counsel to employees to help them address issues with co-workers or management; investigating internal complaints regarding fair treatment and compliance with ER policies and laws (including those that arise through the CARE Integrity Hotline); managing ER compliance (ensuring that employees and managers are in adherence of employment policies and laws; providing ER guidance to managers and employees on the interpretation of ER related policies and procedures; support of the exit process (conducting exit interviews – primarily for exempt level staff, advising HRCS and managers on severance matters and position eliminations, and attending unemployment hearings); supporting the appropriate training for managers and employees to mitigate risks and to promote and more engaged workforce; and maintaining ER records. May also be required to assist with absence management matters including accommodations and return to work issues.This role is will be more of a subject matter expert and a mentor, advisor and trainer for ER Specialists; handle more complex ER matters, such as those that come in through the CARE hotline; lead investigations, make recommendations for terminations and take on projects of greater impact and scope than an ER Specialist.The Sr. Specialist in Riverwoods will be supporting a mainly Exempt population and support a number of Directors on ER matters. The Sr. Specialist in the field will be supporting a mainly Non-exempt population and support a number of managers on ER matters.Is responsible for mainly collaborating with Legal, Security, HR Consulting and HR Operations on the above responsibilities.The ideal candidate:A Bachelors degree in related field.5+ years of increasingly responsible HR/Employee Relations experience.Solid experience in ER (subject matter expert, including strong knowledge of employment laws and practices) handling of more complex ER matters; preferably in a large organization with a large non-exempt field presence (for field ER roles).A reputation for discretion, integrity and maintaining confidences. Demonstrated ability to be a highly collaborative team player who works well with all levels of employees and management, and HR staffDemonstrated ability to thrive in a culture that is service-oriented and consultative. Emotionally mature (ability to be objective and to stay calm and focused in dealing with emotional/stressful situations)The ability to deliver services with a realistic/pragmatic approach based on sound judgement - balancing the needs of the business with the values, ER policies and laws under which we operate (knows how to operate in the gray).Strong communicator, presenter, influencer, conflict manager and negotiator, with history of success coaching all levels of management, up to Director, and employees through complex, difficult and emotional issues.A strong problem solver.A strong process orientation.
