The Planning & Consulting Business Partner (“Business Partner”) will serve primarily as an internal business consultant aligned with one or two of the eight (8) businesses comprising New York Life’s Strategic Insurance Businesses (“SIB”). As a member of SIB
Planning & Consulting, a new centralized team that will report to the head of SIB, the Business Partner will:
• Help develop and lead SIB’s centralized strategic and financial planning process to enable portfolio management of SIB’s businesses;
• Support strategic project governance by helping manage the process for evaluating, approving, prioritizing, resourcing and monitoring SIB strategic projects; and
• Serve as a long-term, trusted strategic advisor and consultant to one or more SIB businesses, helping to manage the annual strategic and financial planning process and leading strategic projects for the SIB business(es) supported.
SIB consists of eight businesses: Advanced Markets Network (New York City and Kansas City, KS), Group Membership Associations Division (White Plains, NY), Institutional Annuities (Jersey City, NJ), Long-Term Care Insurance (Austin, TX), New York Life Direct (Tampa, FL), New York Life Ventures (New York City), Seguros Monterrey New York Life (Mexico City, MX), and Worksite (White Plains, NY). The Business Partner could support any of these businesses and might need to travel frequently to business sites.
Responsibilities:
• SIB Strategic and Financial Planning
• Support the development and management of the overall, centralized SIB strategic and financial planning process
• Support the consolidation of individual SIB business strategic and financial plans into an overall plan that will enable portfolio management of SIB’s businesses
• SIB Strategic Project Governance
• Support the development and management of the process for evaluating, approving, prioritizing, resourcing and monitoring SIB Strategic Projects
• Strategic Advisor and Consultant
• Serve as a long-term, trusted strategic advisor and consultant to one or more SIB businesses
• Serve on the senior leadership team of each business supported
• Manage the annual strategic and financial planning process for the SIB business(es) supported
• Research industry trends, competitor dynamics and current events and provide relevant business insights
• Use established strategy frameworks (e.g., SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, Value Chain) for analyzing and developing business strategies
• Collect and organize information and data to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis
• Facilitate reviews and brainstorming sessions related to a business strategy, strategic projects and/or strategic issues
• Prepare presentations to communicate business strategies, including business goals, strategic projects, target markets, key strategic assumptions, market assessment, competitor assessment, etc.
• Help present strategic and financial plans to SIB senior leadership
• Lead strategic projects during the project planning and implementation phases
• Develop project plans, work streams and timelines
• Identify, acquire and manage resources needed, ensuring accountability and progress
• Collaborate with business and functional teams to frame, analyze and develop solutions / recommendations to business opportunities and problems
• Prepare presentations to communicate project plans, business cases, status updates, recommendations, etc.
• Communicate regularly project status to stakeholders
• Help present updates to SIB senior leadership and secure approval of recommendations
• Work closely with the finance and technology departments, as appropriate, while performing planning and consulting responsibilities.
Qualifications:
• Significant work experience (minimum of 10 years) in the financial services industry, preferably the insurance industry
• Prior work experience (preferably 3 to 5 years) as an internal or external management consultant or a member of a corporate strategy group
• College degree; MBA (or comparable advanced degree) preferred
• Critical thinker, very strong analytical and quantitative skills
• Demonstrated ability to translate analysis into business insights and problem solving
• Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, enabling the creation and presentation of a broad range of materials (e.g., business cases, analyses, project plans, status updates)
• Strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong research skills with experience in market and company analysis
• Self-starter with a keen sense of ownership, commitment to the work and results orientation
• Collaborative work style and experience working effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority
• Capable of successfully working both on teams and as an individual contributor
• Proficiency in Spanish preferred but not required
