CNA insurance is currently recruiting for a Catastrophe Claim Specialist for its CAT Operation. This is an inside/outside position.
The successful candidate will have in depth experience in the handling of all aspects of commercial property claims, which includes an understanding of business interruption calculations and principles.
The individual will be proficient in the interpretation of policy coverage and commercial property damage assessment. In addition, a demonstrated knowledge and experience in the handling of Catastrophe claims is preferred. The position requires the ability to meet licensing requirements, travel and work extended hours as warranted in the case of a major catastrophe.
Job Summary
Under technical direction, CAT Claim Specialist investigates and handles catastrophe related property claims within specific limits of authority and is responsible for all aspects of claim handling, including identification of large losses, loss of business income, recovery opportunities, as well as referrals to SIU as warranted. For claims with significant technical complexity, technical support is provided within CAT Office authority. The CAT Claim Specialist reviews coverages, determines liability, compensability, secures information, arranges property damage appraisals, and negotiates and settles claims.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:
• Make initial contact
• Manage diary and establish a plan of action
• Perform onsite inspections
• Confirm cause of loss
• Perform coverage analysis
• Establish scope of work
• Estimate damage
• Set case reserves
• Reach agreed amount and negotiate final settlement with the insured/contractor
• Seek early resolution opportunities
• Interpret complex or unusual policy coverage and determine the application of coverage
• Escalate issues as needed.
Issue payments within scope of authority
• Ensure indemnity accuracy and manage claim expense
• Identify files with potential fraud and refer to SIU.
• Identify potential opportunities for recovery
• Prepare and present reports for management.
• Responsible for accurate input of data fields
• May provide guidance and assistance to other claims staff and independent adjusters
• Keep current on state/territory regulations/issues as well as industry activity and trends.
• May perform additional duties at the discretion of the AVP Catastrophe Response
The candidate would also oversee independent adjusters/consultants who confirm the cause of loss, perform field inspections, estimate damages and submit inspection reports.

• Solid knowledge of claims and insurance industry theory and best practices
• Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge
• Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
• Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners
• Ability to work independently, managing time, multi task and meet deadlines
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills enabling viable alternative solutions
• Ability to exercise independent judgement and make critical business decisions effectively assessing the merits of claims as well as evaluating claims based on a cost benefit analysis.
• Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software
• Ability to adapt to change and value diverse opinions and ideas
• Ability to fully comprehend claim information; and to further articulate analyses of claims in internal reports
• Ability to handle claims with a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
2. Typically a minimum three to five years claims experience. Experience handling commercial property claims required. Understanding of business interruption claims needed. Coverage knowledge and expertise required.
