Job Description:
The individual’s role will be to provide subject matter expertise and support to accounting initiatives that impact accounting results and/or the general ledger. This role will also provide guidance to the US Finance community on accounting processes to ensure overall accuracy of US components of global accounting results and the consolidated financial statements.
Responsibilities
• Oversee accounting and data requirements for the general ledger and other critical finance systems that produce accounting results and recommend changes required to ensure accurate results. These requirements can arise from new transactions or new accounting guidance, operational changes or process improvements and the desired candidate will need to be able to link these concepts together.
• Assist US Finance teams to develop new operational accounting processes for implementation and understand impacts to accounting results. This includes ledger set-up to facilitate management and financial reporting and disclosure, and associated controls and analytics.
• Develop and implement key financial statement ledger control processes and analytics to enhance the control processes of the financial close and support compliance with Canadian and NAIC reporting standards.
• Be a key member of the IFRS financial close by providing guidance to business units and finance teams on accounting issues that arise during the close to ensure US results are properly aligned with Sun Life’s global reporting standards.
• Provide training and support on finance reporting tools such as the Oracle accounting system, Discoverer and Smartview reporting tools. Be proficient with these tools as well Microsoft Excel in order to efficiently data mine significant volumes and analyze results accurately to help problem solve operational accounting issues in a short period of time.
• Position will interact with all levels of employees within the US finance community, including cross functional teams, such as Expenses, Service Center, Treasury, Corporate Finance Shared Services, etc. and will need to liaison with these teams on Finance initiatives.

Qualifications
• Accounting Degree with 7+ years of financial accounting and reporting experience, preferably in the financial services industry. The successful candidate must have the ability to research accounting issues and translate them into operational solutions. The preferred candidate will have a strong knowledge of accounting and financial reporting, including being current with IFRS and NAIC accounting standards, related to Insurance and Financial Services. He or she must be hands-on, highly competent and able to independently analyze issues and provide solutions.
• Collaborates effectively - ability to manage through influence and leading the activities of others to accomplish business goals and achieve project objectives. The successful candidate must be effective in managing internal relationships, collaborating across business units and functional departments with peers.
• Change and Project Management Skills – The candidate must be able to work independently, take initiative and accountability for project management deliverables. He or she must demonstrate the ability to meet objectives with little direction by applying planning and analytical skills. Strong organizational and time management abilities are a must.
• Drives for action: The candidate must be able to understand the end to end business process and simplify these into steps for operational implementation. He or she must be highly motivated with the desire to consistently seek out improvements to current processes.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are a must.
• Knowledge and expertise with the Oracle General Ledger, financial reporting hierarchies and associated reporting tools (Essbase/Smartview, Hyperion Financial Reporting, Discoverer), is a plus.
