Description
The Director of Credit Risk Review will lead the Loan Review Department in providing senior management, the Board of Directors of SHUSA, and the Business Units (BUs) with an independent view of the quality of the lending function, ensuring the BUs adhere to credit risk policies and procedures and reviewing the adequacy of the internal control environment.
The incumbent of this position will have three primary areas of responsibility:
To cover SHUSA’s Lending Units (currently SBNA and SCUSA) and review all type of loans (commercial and retail);
To review and challenge loan classifications, risk ratings, and the overall quality of credit analysis performed by the credit officers; and
To independently assess adherence to and effectiveness of underwriting guidelines and credit policies in place to support credit professionals of the various lending units.
• Validate loan classifications assigned by credit officers.
• Lead a team in conducting ongoing monitoring of the adherence to applicable policies and procedures through reviews of samples of high-risk/large exposures, the internal watch list, delinquency reports, non-accrual loans, and charge-offs.
• Develop an annual Loan Review Plan to be approved by the SHUSA Board at least annually; the Plan will cover all lending units under SHUSA and will be monitored on a quarterly basis for adequate completion.
• Be responsible for all aspects of the Team Member’s life cycle, including recruitment, performance management, skills assessments, and development.
• Verify compliance with applicable laws and regulations and ensure compliance with the legal and internal lending limits.
• Verify that the BU adheres to the Documentation Quality and Filing Policy; ensure compliance with loan agreements, sufficiency of collateral documentation and lien perfection (including adequate assessment of the mitigating factors and clear identification), restructured loans, real estate owned, investments, accounts receivables, and other assets.
• Ensure that FEVE (Watch List) credits are managed according to established guidelines for such credits.
• Review individual and portfolio concentrations for adherence to guidelines while monitoring and tracking exceptions.
• Confirm adherence to the credit policies and procedures as established by the Board of Directors.
• Review Risk Rating accuracy and timeliness of changes to the Risk Ratings.
• Manage a team in reviewing a sample of new loans to ensure recently originated credits have been approved according to the existing underwriting criteria and to verify the assessment of any exceptions to them.
• Where applicable, assess the sufficiency of the specific loan loss reserve assigned to a credit.
Qualifications
10+ years experience in an Internal Audit, Risk Monitoring, or regulatory background
5+ years in a management capacity
Subject Matter Expert in lending practices/organizations lending guidelines
BA in Business Admin, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or equivalent experience
Strong people-manager with the ability to create and build a team
Demonstrated track record of managing a team of strong individual contributions, interacting with Executive-level management, and working within a team environment
Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of credit policies and procedures, regulations, and applicable law affecting lending practices
Ability to operate and maintain an independent status from the business units
Demonstrated track record interacting with regulators and external/internal audit
Knowledge of the operational, accounting, credit, regulatory, market, and technological risks within Financial Institutions.
