Job Description
Specifications and Standards activities enable ubiquity by maximizing global interoperability and commonality across technology platforms, while providing the flexibility to enable ongoing competition and product differentiation by the various participants in the payments ecosystem. Participation in standards bodies, liaison organizations and advisory groups form the building blocks for all of Visa’s existing and future products and services. The Global Head of Standards Management will lead the team responsible for the global governance of Visa’s current participation and engagement within Industry Standards, as well as in industry related advocacy and trade associations. The Global Standards Management team ensures standards participation, decisions, formal contributions and general issue resolution aligns with Visa strategy.
The team creates and manages the overarching strategy related to Visa’s ongoing involvement in such organizations, as well as all global communications between standards participants, the decision-making bodies and the executive team. Additional responsibilities include stakeholder training and education, issue escalation and ongoing management, executive level education and awareness, and budget oversight of standards related expenditures.
Responsibilities
• Lead the Global Standards Management Team, being ultimately accountable for establishing and institutionalizing the strategic vision and direction as set by the Standards Champions and Corporate Risk Committee (CRC) and Executive Committee (EC)
• Manage relationship with all senior executives globally to gain consensus on all significant issues including participation levels, industry challenges and pivots to Visa’s strategic position as it relates to standards and other trade associations
• Matrix management of the Europe Product Standards and Industry Liaison group, to ensure alignment in standards management practices across Visa Inc.
• Represent
Visa at key industry standards bodies and industry forums at the Board/Executive Committee level, as appropriate, to ensure resulting industry standards and global specifications meet Visa strategic objectives for specifications and standards
• Bring subject matter expertise and market insight to Visa to educate and support the business teams impacted by resulting specifications and standards
• Manage skill and competency gap identification as well as development of standards and trade association participants, including training
• Champion operational excellence across the team to ensure good documentation and exchange of information with a focus on strategic outcomes for the business
• Lead the Standards Working group and the Global Standards Management Team to create various white paper/assessment reports, including initial and going recommendations to the CRC regarding:
◦ Visa’s overall strategic position in relation to standards, as well as participation in other
organizations such as trade and liaison organizations;
◦ Identification and mitigation of strategic risks associated with each organization and set of activities/objectives;
◦ Where Visa’s major competitors (traditional and non-traditional) are shifting levels of engagement to identify potential trends;
◦ Where to continue participation, where to expand Visa’s presence and possibly push for a strong role (such as Chair of working groups, ExCo membership), where to resign from
participation, what new groups should Visa join;
◦ Visa’s current Standards participants, their current roles and responsibilities, to identify any
required additions/changes;
◦ How to more effectively engage with regional staff, both for creating a stronger global position to global standards bodies, as well as gain insight into opportunities for regional/domestic standards group participation; and
◦ An updated resource and budget plan, for the central Standards Management group, the business units providing standards expertise, as well as the regions.
• Direct responsibility for reporting to the Corporate Risk Committee (CRC), Operating Committee (OC) and Executive Committee
• Develop insights and recommendations for overall investments that are made annually towards standards participation
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree required, MBA preferred or equivalent experience
• 20+ years of demonstrated in depth knowledge of payments products, services, technologies, and innovations; global client business and processing experience a plus
• An aptitude to stay ahead of new payment, innovation and standards trends in a rapidly evolving ecosystem. Visa experience is preferred.
• Experience leading and developing a standards management and trade association team
• Direct experience with standards and specifications setting bodies
• Strong understanding of financial services landscape and regulatory environment
• Strategic leader and thinker who challenges status quo, looks for creative solutions and can balance big picture strategy and detailed, flawless execution
• Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to drive consensus in cross-regional and cross-functional teams.
• Flexible and proactive trouble-shooting capabilities with the ability to manage diverse groups organized within different organizational reporting lines
• Process-oriented problem solver who can adapt within a multi-tasking environment and simultaneously manage multiple issues and projects with limited resources
• Acumen to present complex concepts and solutions to executives and committees High attention to detail and quality for all work products
• Hands-on, entrepreneurial and flexible to take broad guidance from management and execute plan of action to drive results
• History of success with internal and external client facing roles, as well as product management and platform services development
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
