Credit Review is 3rd Line of Defense function within MUFG Americas, with the Head of Credit Review reporting into the Audit and Finance (A&F) Committee with a dotted line to the CEO of the Americas [Note: this reporting structure is under review]. The Head of Credit Review for the Americas is responsible for covering the Americas, which includes MUFG Americas Holdings (MUAH) and BTMU’s Americas entities*, and is accountable for providing for assurance over credit risk governance framework to include credit risk appetite, credit risk control and measurement at both portfolio and individual levels, policy, IT systems and operational infrastructures.
Essential Functions
• Structure and oversee an efficient and effective credit risk governance framework to:
◦ Ensures valid and well-reasoned conclusions in regards to the effectiveness of the credit risk governance framework.
◦ Assess the state of the governance, risk management, and control environment aspects relevant to credit risk
◦ Reinforce adequate and timely scoping and focusing under risk-based methodology
◦ Report results in an effective and timely basis, leading to appropriate remedial action and ongoing management of risk
• Develop and manage a team of senior credit examiners, who will be directly accountable for examination and monitoring activities.
• Work jointly with senior managers across the Bank, including Internal Audit for the Americas (IAA), to develop, implement and refine the various exam processes in order to achieve productivity, efficiency and quality.
• Actively seek the views of key stakeholders and coordinate with them to promote efficiency and effectiveness of credit review activities.
• Effectively manage the Executive Committee of the Americas (ECA)-level relationships to a mutually accountable, productive, respectful and trusted level.
• Act as a leader and role model; engage as a team player in the Senior Leadership Team; develop staff across the department; and continuously improve self and department
• Maintain the requisite knowledge of current trends, regulatory knowledge and technical issues impacting the professional practice of credit exam and areas of responsibility. Participate in applicable executive management forums and A&F Committee meetings advising on emerging risk and credit issues.
• Timely and transparent communication of credit exam effectiveness issues and governance issues to the A&F Committee and other key stakeholders, which include senior leaders from across the Bank and regulators, when appropriate. Present quarterly reports to A&F Committee.
• Actively participate in Bank’s enterprise-wide risk, control, governance teams, initiatives, and interact effectively with external regulatory agencies.
Qualifications
• Fifteen plus years of internal or external first line lending or risk management experience, including significant management and leadership experience.
• Extensive experience with the financial industry and related markets, related regulatory bodies, and current industry events and trends
• Extensive knowledge of risk assessment, audit methodology, and execution.
• Demonstrated proficiency in technology as required for assigned areas (MS office, data analytics etc)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• The ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization, including Bank staff, management, directors and prudential regulators
• Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in accounting, finance, or related business discipline
• A MBA or Master’s degree in business, accounting or related field is preferred
