Ameritas Life Insurance Corp is seeking a Senior Underwriting Director to drive the business by underwriting the larger face amount, more complex cases and effectively select and classify these risks to obtain mortality results within pricing. This position provides training and guidance to less experienced underwriters and to our distribution partners. It acts as an interface with marketing and distribution on case reviews and reconsiderations and assists with special projects.
Essential Job Functions
• Responsible for the appraisal, classification and selection of the larger, more complex, applications for life and variable insurance. The incumbent is authorized to approve amounts up to the company's automatic reinsurance limits or the maximum approval amounts designated by the division.
• Administer company policies and rules as they apply to established selection standards for individual new business division.
• Evaluate individual applications to determine if facultative reinsurance outlets should be used for impaired risks.
• Communicates regularly in both written and verbal form with field sales personnel on a variety of subjects. The ability to effectively deliver information and "sell" decisions, both positive and negative is crucial to establishing a good relationship and rapport with the producers.
• Effectively interacts with field personnel in regard to rated cases which has a direct impact on the placement of substandard business and the reputation and perception of the Underwriting Department as a whole.
• Participation in field training seminars, new agent schools, and agency office visits is required, and further develops the working relationship necessary to contribute to the marketing and sales efforts of the company. Assist with Home Office underwriting seminars.
• Develop a close, synergistic working relationship with our various re-insurance partners so that their expertise may be utilized on large, difficult and complex cases.
• Participate in product development by recommending underwriting requirements and guidelines based on extensive experience, as required.
• Assist in the recommendation, enhancement and testing of automated underwriting systems.
• Monitors the work flow of an underwriting unit, provide training and guidance to less experienced underwriting associates, conducts special studies.
• Develop compliance procedures and practices.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience and FLMI, FALU, or CLU courses completed for designation or being actively pursued
• 10-15 years of full authority underwriting experience in positions of increasing responsibility
• Incumbent must be located in the Cincinnati, OH or Lincoln, NE area and be based out of the Corporate office. The position may allow for limited work-from-home flexibility.
• Special Skills or Knowledge:
• Through, detailed knowledge of the Company's Underwriting policies, procedures, and philosophies, as well as a broad knowledge of the individual products, policy provisions, and underwriting manuals.
• A comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to analyze and evaluate financial statements and make appropriate decisions on amounts of insurance which can be issued is also critical.
