Position Summary:
Kemper is looking for highly talented and motivated people to join leadership positions in its Tax Department. More specifically, we are looking for a Director Tax Reporting based in our Chicago offices to lead tax reporting, tax compliance and tax forecasting. This person will drive significant transformational change including implementing digital technologies and work closely with business partners and tax department teammates.
The Director of Tax Reporting will lead our tax provision, compliance and forecasting functions and participate in tax planning, risk assessment and company initiatives. This person must be able to think strategically as well as engage in day-to-day tactical details.
The Director Tax Reporting is expected to be able to lead the Tax Department within 3-4 years.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead financial reporting for all taxes under both ASC 740 and SSAP 101 (as appropriate).
• Lead tax return preparation, review and filing for all taxes.
• Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders for financial reporting and compliance.
• Develop and lead tax forecasting process including working with FP&A and Treasury leaders.
• Lead multiple significant process improvement and/or technology implementation projects.
• Coordinate with tax planning on tax planning and risk management activities.
• Conduct research and analysis with respect to technical tax and tax accounting rules.
• Produce KPIs.
• Train and mentor staff.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent training.
• 8+ years of relevant tax experience with an accounting firm, law firm or corporate tax function.
• 5+ years of supervising teams and developing people.
• Advanced knowledge of ASC 740 and SSAP 101.
• Advanced knowledge of insurance company and corporate taxation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to analyze and review statutes, regulations and guidance and then make recommendations and take action.
• Experience enabling growth, driving operational effectiveness, managing risk and improving the quality, speed and availability of data relevant to tax matters.
• Track record in prioritizing competing demands, sound decision making and delivering results on tight timelines.
• Experience working with digital technologies including RPA and common tax provision and compliance platforms; Corptax a plus.
• Experience working in a matrix environment, influencing strategy and achieving goals by working with people across the organization.
• Detail-oriented, organized and possesses excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication skills, with an ability to address complex tax matters in ways that are meaningful and useful to non-tax professionals.
• Experience with life/nonlife groups.
• Ability to attract and retain high quality finance professionals.
• Master's degree in Tax, Accounting, or related field preferred; CPA a plus.
