The Director, Data Governance and Managementis responsible for developing and managing a formalized data governance process and structure to oversee the availability, usability, integrity, and privacy of CUNA Mutual Group’s data assets and coordinating data-related activities across the enterprise in support of each Business Unit’s continued growth. In addition, this individual is responsible for building the enterprise data governance and data management functions in accordance and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
At the same time, this role must partner with data consumers across the enterprise to create and maximize the value of data for the enterprise. This role must enable the efficient usage and storage of data assets, allowing teams to move faster while ensuring data security and quality. This role leads CUNA Mutual Group’s data governance function and must effectively prioritize the implementation of new tools and processes in a practical, feasible manner that will mature over time and not be perceived as bureaucratic or overbearing.
Job Responsibilities:
• Design future-state Data Governance and Management program and assist in development of overall Enterprise Data Strategy.
• Provide a shared perspective and vision for data governance and data management.
• Partner with key stakeholders to understand current and future business needs and how data is currently leveraged to ensure effective and efficient decision making. Understand strategic objectives of the company and ensure that the Data Governance and Management program aligns appropriately.
• Establish rules and procedures for how to use, manage, share, and access data with customers, third parties, and internal Business Units in conjunction with Information Security, Global Risk & Assurance, Compliance and Legal.
• Provide guidance on and build the processes and tools needed to comply with data-related legal and contractual obligations, including those in CUNA Mutual Group’s contracts with customers, third party data providers, and others.
• Bring to bear concepts of effective data governance and management to monitor data and decision quality and utilization. Initiate and sustain the program to cover all products and functional domains effectively.
• Provide technical and people leadership to effectively implement key concepts such as data lineage, metadata management, data quality measurement and data stewardship.
• Conduct and maintain source system analysis and data profiling for lifecycle management of critical data elements.
• Create and ensure controls for the appropriate protection of enterprise information assets through a defined life cycle, from acquisition or creation to end of life destruction and disposal procedures.
• Develop and maintain controls on data quality, inter-operability, and sources to effectively manage corporate risk associated with the use of data and analytics.
• Educate employees, business leaders, and customers on data risks and best practices in partnership with Information Security, Global Risk & Assurance, Compliance and Legal.
• Build data governance team and required skillsets within the organization and operationalize data governance and management procedures across the enterprise.
• In the context of the enterprise, ensure the appropriate data policies and standards are in place and that data is properly classified and protected.
• Define enterprise data management metrics, reporting protocols, and action plans.
• Establish data steward/custodian/owner groups as required.
• Partner with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure cyber-security policies, practices, and obligations related to data cyber-security requirements are effectively met.

Job Requirements:
• Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Law or Business Administration or related field.
• Familiarity with data privacy rules and other data-related regulations with the ability to translate those requirements into compliant processes and solutions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate with executives and employees at all levels and all business functions through reports, meetings, news bulletins, memos, and other creative forms of communication.
• Knowledge of data quality, metadata management, lineage and master data management with experience in financial services preferred.
• 10+ years of experience in data governance, data stewardship, data analysis preferably with experience in enterprise-level data warehouse and business intelligence applications.
• Ability to develop and lead teams towards a common goal.
• Partner effectively with Technology, Information Security, Risk & Assurance, Compliance, Legal and other Business functions.
• Self-starter, with a passion for data quality and motivated to navigate across very broad financial services products.
• Experience building a data governance/data management function from the ground up is preferred.
