Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), a key segment of the investment management industry, have exhibited strong growth trends in recent years. As a leading provider of investment solutions and products, Northern Trust deepened its investment management capabilities with the 2011 launch of its branded FlexShares exchange traded funds. FlexShares are investor-focused ETFs that leverage Northern Trust’s asset management and wealth management businesses and are a top strategic initiative of the corporation. The exchange traded funds group is directly responsible for the development and execution of the business and product strategy for FlexShares ETFs as well as the ongoing business execution. At the end of the first quarter 2017, FlexShares ranked 13th among 107 U.S. ETF providers with $13.4 billion in assets under management exceeded.
An essential component of our business success is effective collaboration with market participants, including market making firms, authorized participants and a wide array of investors. To this end we have established a Director of Capital Markets role. In addition to the traditional ETF capital markets responsibilities the person filling this role will provide ETF thought leadership in the area of capital markets, focusing on new opportunities created by the rise of investor-focused ETFs. By combining empirical analysis and insightful relationship management, this aspect of the role seeks to identify, develop and feature ETF product and trading attributes that benefit both investor and capital markets stakeholders. The person in this position will be a key contributor to the overall ETF business and serve important internal and external constituents.
Key Responsibilities
1. Responsible for establishing and fostering relationships with key constituents of the ETF secondary market ecosystem (e.g., market makers, authorized participants and listing venues):
• Solicit firms to make markets in FlexShares ETFs.
• Monitor the market-making activities of strategic partners to insure breadth and depth of liquidity in quoted markets for FlexShares ETFs.
• Work collaboratively with Product Management to secure seed capital for new products.
• Work collaboratively with Product Management to manage relationships with authorized participants.
• Work collaboratively with Product Management to foster and manage relationships with listing venues.
2. Develop trade analytics for proprietary and competitive ETF products in order to support:
• Sales and servicing professionals in positioning FlexShares ETFs with investing prospects and clients from a capital markets perspective.
• Investment Strategy team’s assessment/refinement of existing products and development of new investment strategies.
• Product Management team’s identification and determination of product attributes that affect investors and capital markets participants.
• The broad ETF group and organization by developing educational forums and collateral for internal use.
• Marketing and business development professionals by contributing to thought leadership in the form of empirical research and topical communications.
3. General Management Responsibilities:
• Develop best practices for serving internal and external constituents in the areas of capital markets and delivering thought leadership in the area of trading and execution.
• Provide effective written and oral communications across all levels of the organization and across business units.
4. Supports group head with key business unit and corporate initiatives
1. Bachelor degree; Master in Business and Administration and/or CFA strongly preferred.
2. At least seven years of post graduate business experience to include investment and/or capital markets experience is required.
3. Strong, demonstrated proficiency in empirical research and analysis is required. Understanding of trading systems and applications is a plus.
4. Exceptional organization skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound business judgment.
5. Strong, demonstrated skills in oral and written communication; including experience in effectively communicating with international employees, colleagues, clients, and executives.
6. Demonstrated teamwork and interpersonal skills. Ability to forge strong relations with other senior personnel in the ETF Group and broader Northern Trust organization.
7. Investor-centric focus and entrepreneurial experience is also highly valued.
