Group Corporate Relations adds value to the business by enhancing and protecting Barclays' reputation.
Corporate Relations advises senior management on reputation issues, drives proactive reputation-building programmes and manages communications with stakeholders including the media, government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), communities and colleagues.
The Group Media Relations team, led by Tom Hoskin, is responsible for delivering Barclays’ messages in a challenging and highly regulated environment, specifically:
• managing the media around Barclays’ financial calendar and major announcements
• management of media issues potentially impacting Barclays’ reputation
• communication via media of Barclays’ strategy
• management of Group CEO, Chairman and Group Centre leadership media programmes, development and placement of articles and announcements to communicate the corporate narrative
• working with business unit media relations teams, Government Relations and Investor Relations where issues have potential impact on Barclays’ reputation
• maintaining relationships with key journalists and handling media queries
• monitoring media coverage of Barclays, evaluation of coverage, training of key spokespeople
The Media Relations team is also responsible for the governance processes around Barclays colleagues speaking with the media, and public speaking engagements at conferences or other events.
Overall purpose of role:
The Vice President, Group Media Relations, is a key role in a small team which oversees media relations for the Group as a whole. The team is primarily responsible for working with the business and the media to ensure our priorities and progress are reflected in news reporting. That includes presentation of results but increasingly focuses on developing and executing plans which communicate our corporate narrative priorities. It also includes anticipating and managing responses to issues which are a threat to Barclays’ reputation. Specifically, this role will:
• develop and execute communications campaigns related to innovation, as Barclays moves from a restructuring phase to a future-facing, customer-centric story about innovating and improving the business for customers, clients and colleagues
• communicate our business priorities and performance through the financial calendar cycle, including briefing the financial media on our results and major announcements, and managing media issues.
Key Accountabilities and Skills required:
• Key specific accountabilities.
◦ Supporting the MD and Director, Group Media in preparing and executing media activity for financial calendar events including annual, half year and quarterly results, annual report publication and the AGM.
◦ Responsible for the planning and execution of communications related to Group-wide innovation and operational excellence.
• Stakeholder management and leadership.
◦ This role requires interaction at all levels of the business including the Chairman, Chief Executive and members of the Executive Committee.
◦ It requires working with the media, from financial and banking reporters, sector specialist and trade media to general news reporters and broadcast
◦ The role will also involve periodically advising on and delivering media training for senior spokespeople
• Decision making and problem solving.
◦ The successful applicant will need to be able to analyse and understand financial reporting and concepts, and explain them clearly and accurately to the media.
◦ To support and enforce the Group Corporate Affairs governance and control framework including the Group external communications policy and the Group Social media policy.
Your Skills and Qualifications will include:
Essential
• Extensive experience of working with financial media
• Detailed knowledge and understanding of specialist media relations practices
• Capacity to think and plan strategically
• Able to operate under own initiative
• Sound industry and business understanding
• Ability to operate effectively in a dispersed team working environment.
• Relationship management experience at a senior level in a media environment
Preferred
• International business experience
• Detailed knowledge and understanding of financial markets.
• Good knowledge and understanding of the structures, roles and businesses across the Barclays Group
