About the Position
TIAA Investments is seeking a fixed income research analyst to cover the taxable and tax-exempt municipal finance investments for insurance and total return portfolios.
The right individual must have an understanding of the municipal finance market and/or possess experience in municipal debt analysis. Solid critical thinking and communications skills are required to be successful. The successful candidate will work with the municipal portfolio manager and senior research analysts on fixed income securities across a range of portfolio mandates, including: TIAA’s General Account assets, mutual funds, insurance portfolios, and non-pension accounts.
The Fixed Income Research team supports numerous TIAA fixed income portfolio mandates that collectively manage over $225 billion in fixed income assets. TIAA's taxable and tax-exempt municipal portfolios total over $10 billion in exposure.
Major Responsibilities:
• Evaluate and monitor the credit quality characteristics of a large portfolio of municipal debt issuers.
• Perform active surveillance of municipal portfolio holdings and write regular research reports detailing the holdings.
• Work in close collaboration with portfolio managers, traders, and other research analysts to provide thorough credit opinions and actionable trading recommendations.
• Assist portfolio managers in forming and implementing their investment strategies.
• Contribute to all formal reports and processes (internal ratings, recommendation lists, watch lists) that enable the efficient and transparent oversight of the asset class.
• Represent Credit Research in meetings with issuers, interface with Nuveen Risk Management Team, and support Nuveen goals and values.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to junior analysts.
• Occasional travel is required.
Required Skills and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree required. MBA, MPA, CFA or CPA strongly preferred.
• Strong municipal accounting knowledge required.
• Minimum of 10 years of industry experience. Emphasis on municipal credit analysis, fund accounting and/or debt issuance preferred.
• Strong quantitative, technical, analytical, critical thinking, communication, presentation, and financial modeling abilities required.
• Must be proficient in Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Bloomberg strongly preferred.
• Ability to collaboratively share ideas and insights with portfolio managers, traders, and fellow analysts.
Desired Skills and Experience:
• Broad knowledge of various credit sectors within the municipal marketplace preferred.
