What is the opportunity?
As Senior Director, Communications, you will have the opportunity to deliver creative internal and external communications that will make employees, media, and other key audiences pause and say “Wow! Who would have expected that sort of engaging communications from a bank?” You will lead the team that provides strategic communications advice that supports business objectives, protects and enhances RBC’s reputation, and deepens employee engagement, as it relates to our largest business segment by earnings, Personal & Commercial Banking (P&CB). This role requires experience across several aspects of corporate communications and an ability to move comfortably between strategic advice and counsel and flawless tactical execution. This is a high impact role and you will demonstrate a strong ability to collaborate, exceptional impact and influence skills, and an understanding that our purpose is to help clients thrive and communities prosper.
What will you do?
• Provide senior communications counsel to executives/senior leaders on priority projects with high potential to affect RBC’s reputation & brand, employee engagement and client loyalty.
• Provide direction on communication approach for urgent issues and crisis management to emphasize alignment of communications with leadership actions.
• Provide communications counsel and lead on cross-segment external communications initiatives, strategic communications plans and tactical execution and guidance on messaging.
• Serve as a valued partner to business partners to ensure alignment of communications to business priorities. Work in tandem with business partners and Communications colleagues on issues and communications plans, strategy and communications related to cross-segment projects and issues. Research, develop, implement and manage communications plans, processes & tools/tactics as appropriate. Measure effectiveness.
• Work with key RBC partners in the business and functions to proactively identify, address and mitigate potential reputational risks and leverage opportunities facing RBC’s P&CB business, ensuring alignment of communication messaging & implementation between primary internal & external audiences (e.g. employees, client, government, media).
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have:
• Post-secondary degree: communications, related studies (journalism)
• Minimum 15 years of communications experience with proven track record of successfully helping achieve key business outcomes
• Public relations and media relations experience; pro-active PR campaign experience
• Experience in issues management and change management communications (both with internal stakeholders, and externally with media)
• Ability to impact through influence and an exceptional ability to partner and build consensus; Experience in leading cross-functional teams or groups
• Experience and confidence interacting with senior management and effectively presenting a point of view across varying levels of the organization
• Exceptional knowledge of communication tools, templates and technology; familiarity and comfort with social media
• Project Management knowledge and strong organizational & time management skills, deadline driven
• Extensive organizational awareness of highly regulated industries, including financial services and, more specifically, RBC
