Role Purpose:
Develops credit risk analytic measurements for specific products or portfolios as assigned. Leads project teams composed of senior subject matter experts from Business Units and Risk areas. Ensures ratings and risk measures are conceptually sound, meets all Basel II and other regulatory requirements, and are consistent with industry practice. Supports key decision-making processes including, but not limited to, transaction approval, pricing for risk, portfolio management, stress testing, strategic decision-making, performance measurement and the Economic Credit Risk Capital (ECRC) framework. Functions as an individual contributor of technical expertise for the area.
Impact on the Business
• Risk measures developed (PD, LGD and EAD) are key drivers to determine regulatory capital, economic capital and stressed measures.
• Accurate and valid measures impact all aspects of capital business strategy including Revised Operating Plan process and risk/return decisions on individual transactions
• Economic Capital is critical element of ICAAP process for capital adequacy
• Meeting Basel II regulatory requirements is critical for wholesale businesses and HNAH.
Customers / Stakeholders
• Ensure customers/stakeholders are included in assigned projects and initiatives as subject matter experts and in steering committees to optimize performance and enhance acceptance of rating measures.
• Support business units to understand key drivers of risk measures to help optimize risk capital as loans are structured.
Leadership & Teamwork
• Work with Finance, Chief Risk Officer, Credit Risk Reporting and the businesses to ensure requisite support for activities, including consistencies in framework, methodologies and reporting and improved portfolio credit risk management analysis in external reporting.
• Represent the organization at presentations and conferences before clients and industry peers and associations on credit risk modeling and portfolio management.
• Lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.
• Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.
Operational Effectiveness & Control
• Develop quantitative models and analytical tools supporting internal credit rating, economic capital, credit reserves (inclusive of derivatives), relationship pricing and profitability, strategic decision-making including acquisition/divestiture analysis, credit portfolio/concentration management, Basel II and new/risk sensitive reporting processes.
• Develop and manage the implementation of the organization’s Economic Risk Capital framework for retail, wholesale, counterparty derivative portfolios and credit hedge portfolios, including methodology, processes, policies and systems underlying the framework.
• Utilize advanced modeling techniques to evaluate concentration and correlation risk and return versus risk contribution at the client and industry level to determine optimal areas for portfolio re-balancing. Partner with supported business units to achieve plan targets within an acceptable balance of risk and control; work with the business units to integrate new quantitative credit risk tools within the processes.
• Prepare HBUS and HNAH Commercial to be qualified for Basel AIRB by the established deadline.
• Build broad-based consensus and understanding of credit risk analytics within the organization through formal training and targeted communications. Articulate complex credit risk quantification, Economic Capital and portfolio management theory into terms understandable to executive and business management.
• Develop and implement reports and metrics that enable senior and business management and regulators to utilize Economic Risk Capital results and tools that enable businesses to better price new transactions and improve risk adjusted performance (RAROC) at all levels of activity. Establish more sensitive risk limits and controls.
• To implement the Group compliance policy locally by containing compliance risk in liaison with the Head of Group Compliance, Global Business Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer, ensuring adequate compliance resources and training, fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with regulators.
• Complete other responsibilities, as assigned.
Role Context:
• Position functions as a technical expert at an individual contributor level
• Position manages, on a project basis, a number of domestic and off-shore analytic resources in formulating recommendations
• Acts as manager for Wholesale CRAOC and other committees as assigned
• Project manage assignments from rating development to system implementation

• Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
Qualifications
• Minimum of seven years proven and progressive credit and financial services experience or equivalent, including the implementation of cutting edge credit risk analytics.
• Bachelor’s degree in statistics, business, related field or equivalent experience; Masters degree preferred.
• Strong communications, analytical, decision-making, lateral thinking and interpersonal skills.
• Solid understanding of commercial, and counterparty derivative credit processes, including credit risk assessment and systems, as well as econometrics, statistics and simulations.
• Extensive knowledge of the Basel Capital Accord and US regulatory guidelines.
• Proven ability to drive and manage change in a large, complex organization.
• Thorough knowledge of financial theory, economic capital modeling and decision support and performance measurement models and methodologies.
• Knowledge and experience in advanced model development techniques and of active credit portfolio management. Thorough understanding of credit derivative instruments, structured credit products and other risk mitigation techniques used to execute portfolio improvement strategies.
