To oversee assigned funds and investment managers to assist Senior Management and the Board of Directors in fulfilling their fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders. To identify new active managers for replacement needs, diversify manager risk, address capacity limitations, and fulfill new mandates. To serve as a client portfolio manager in meetings with clients, consultants, prospects, and press to share insights on the funds. To lead or make material contributions to our product management process.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Manages staff. Provides guidance, training and motivation as necessary to develop staff. Hires, evaluates and counsels personnel. Follows corporate disciplinary procedures per established Vanguard standards as required. Sets performance standards, reviews performance, provides feedback, and recommends wage increases in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures.
• Acts as the primary owner of assigned funds and performance. Develops a well-informed opinion on the probability of the long-term investment success of the assigned funds and managers using quantitative and qualitative inputs. Identifies and anticipates key issues. Conveys these opinions through meetings with Senior Staff and the Board of Directors, manager oversight memos, annual fund reviews, dashboard ratings and other presentations.
• Builds and maintains a list of high-potential managers through continual monitoring and contact within the assigned manager universe. Develops and executes on a manager search plan by creatively sourcing managers; leads interactions with potential managers. Thoroughly documents notes and opinions on managers. Appropriately advocates for fund and/or manager change through persuasive, persistent, and concise communication with peers and management.
• Remains current on the investment landscape. Keeps abreast of potential manager evaluation tools; including but not limited to manager databases, attribution and risk management software, industry conferences, competitor developments, and external research publications. Recommends new tools when appropriate and remove ones that are no longer needed and/or cost beneficial.
• Defines manager and fund guidelines and expectations; recommends manager weights and cash flow policies.
• Develops strong relationships with both internal and external partners and be the primary owner of the assigned manager relationships. Cultivates manager relationships through thoughtful and efficient interactions while remaining objective.
• Acts as the primary client portfolio manager and subject matter expert for the assigned funds. Delivers presentations on the assigned funds’ performance attribution and current investment strategy to internal and external audiences in an in-depth and objective manner. Proactively engages internal and external clients with relevant information on topical issues.
• Develops manager fee proposals and participate in fee negotiations and contract modifications. Take ownership of the assigned funds' positioning to clients and prospects. Communicate hypotheses on industry cash flow trend drivers to product management team. Advocates for new products that have the potential to satisfy enduring client needs.
• Delivers investment reviews to institutional and High-Net-Worth clients; articulate Vanguard’s stance on investment issues/topics. Conveys a similar level of credibility and confidence as the funds' portfolio manager(s). Conveys thought leadership externally.
• Lead or make material contributions to our product management process.
• Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Economics or finance degree, MBA and/or CFA preferred.
• Minimum eight years progressive work experience in the investment management industry with at least five years of concentration in portfolio management, analysis, and/or investment manager evaluation.
• Highly developed analytical skills and thorough understanding of capital markets.
• Proven ability to evaluate and present multiple investment styles across asset classes in an in-depth and objective manner.
• Proven ability to effectively lead a team.
• Demonstrated record of initiative and career advancement and the ability to work independently at a high level.
• Superior interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills.
• Series 6 and 63 (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
Special Factors
• Travel may be required.
