GENERAL FUNCTION
The Manager- Design leads a creative Design team both in project time management as well as driving design content to the organization. Products include hard goods, primarily eyewear, helmets, and military apparel. Must have a design background in automotive or product design. leadership position. Must be collaborative and have the willingness to work with their immediate team as well as collaborate with cross-functional teams in other departments within the brand and across the overall organization, as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitates/oversees development of compelling design proposals of products of varying complexity
• Delegates tasks to the team and has an appropriate level of trust of the team to execute
• Reviews and monitors quality levels from the team before delivery
• Must be able to understand the brand direction and vision from the Design Director as well as understand the brand strategy
• Must have the ability to effectively articulate and communicate the vision to an open forum
• Translates vision into designs themes which demonstrate a vision for the current and future states of Oakley
• Guides multiple high complexity projects simultaneously through ideation phase to concept modeling, and finally to A-class surfacing/industrialization
• Works with Engineers to come up with design and engineering solutions that serve the design vision and fit within engineering constraints
• Participates in and contributes to cross-functional strategy, timing, and process discussion
• Mentors designers and provides technique/approach guidance where needed between formal annual review cycles
• Occasionally participates in non-eyewear or helmets design efforts as necessary and as the Design team’s own skillset dictates
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Product Design/Transportation Design
• 5+ years of experience within the product or automotive design field (may include designer experience or experience working with design processes)
• 2-3 years’ experience in people management within the design environment strongly preferred
• Understanding of prototyping, manufacturing, and assembly processes as it relates to injection molded products
• Ability to understand design process start-to-finish
• Experience in project management, execution time, and time management
• Understanding of 2D sketch to 3D modeling conversion process
• Engaging presenter, able to story -tell around a given concept, and sell big ideas
• Self-motivated and able to manage multiple parallel-path projects as well as a team of designers
• Excellent at creating and maintaining cross-functional working relationships
• Keen attention to detail and ability to identify flaws in proposals
• Stays current on major aesthetic trends and able to articulate them clearly
• Basic understandings of consumer groups or open to research
• Fluent in Adobe Creative suite and Microsoft Office
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree in Product Design/Transportation Design
• 6-10 years of experience within the product or automotive design field
• Knowledge of the sports performance product design industry, including knowledge of market trends and lifecycles
• Sketch/render Viscom skills
