Overview
Lead the design and development work for your product categories under the Urban Outfitters own brand labels. Manage Assistant Designer and ensure their growth as well as providing a platform for them to have creative input on the brands.
Responsibilities
• Generate design proposals and an overall creative vision for your given categories, working alongside your peers in design, concept and print & pattern design within each product cycle.
• Collaborate with the Design Director and Buying team on a weekly basis to review emerging trends to chase in-season.
• Partner with key buying partners to establish a line plan and best approach for each design cycle to cover a balance of what’s working as well as what’s unknown within your assortments.
• Present your product design to buyers and design leadership at sketch reviews and present development samples at proto meetings.
• Work alongside your Production Team partners to communicate your designs and co-develop your products against the established calendar and financial targets.
• Partner with fabric and wash development teams to constantly generate on trend newness within appropriate cost targets.
• Build design proposals together with your technical design partners to send out for development. Generate necessary tech pack work to send out to factories. Partner to drive bi-weekly fittings on model.
• Work with your category Design Coordinator to create, update and maintain tech packs in PDM.
• Occasionally travel to factories for development and execution of programs.
• Develop and train any Assistant Designers within your categories. Ensure training goals are set each review period and renewed regularly. Motivate and encourage them to be creative and to support your needs as well as having their own design ideas showcased alongside your own.
Qualifications
• Have the vision and insight to identify trends and influencers that matter to the UO male customer in their early stages. Have the expertise to take aspirational ideas, focusing on the key details and make them work for a broader audience and at our established retails.
• Translate your ideas into unique and appropriately forward product for the UO labels that give us a point of difference in the market without being too obscure or extreme for our customer.
• Ability to articulate ideas clearly and inspire. Effectively use Adobe Illustrator for the CADing of design work and presentations. Excellent communication skills to communicate ideas and inspirations to others and to interact with designers, buyers and other Home Office staff.
• Organizational skills necessary to manage: multiple tasks and projects, and complete them within deadlines. The ability to delegate and direct the daily activities of the Assistant Designers and provide direction to the team.
• Comprehensive knowledge of apparel construction, including dying, silk screening, washing techniques and other treatments.
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes. Ability to travel to factories if necessary and make vendor/agent meetings productive.
• Personnel skills to motivate, lead, develop and coach people and the recognition that building a team is critical to the Company’s success. The ability to provide feedback and performance evaluation in accordance with Company guidelines with the goal of developing and promoting staff internally.
• The ability to develop partnerships with Buyers, Directors and Department heads.
Education
Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design or a closely related field is required.
Experience Requirement
• 5-7 years in design
• Strong understanding of fashion trends and the Urban Outfitters customers
• Expert-level technical knowledge of apparel construction
• Expert-level knowledge of fabric and trims as well as strong relationships with resources
• Extensive knowledge of fabric treatments as well as wash and dye techniques
• Extensive knowledge of manufacturing techniques and processes
