Product Designer - Fish/ Hunt

The Fly Fishing and Wingshooting Product Development team is seeking a Product Designer responsible for the development, growth, and profit of key Orvis branded product within the fly fishing and wingshooting sub categories of Technical Apparel – Fish/Hunt. We are looking for an individual with product design and development experience and a passion to develop great products that solve problems by driving innovation, quality and performance. This individual will have background and experience in the outdoor market, with a keen interest in wingshooting and fly fishing. The ideal candidate will be organized, self-managed, and have the ability to work collaboratively to accomplish goals. Company Interfaces:
This position reports to the Director of Product Development/Design – Fish/Hunt. The position will also interface with our Merchandising teams (Sr. Merchant, Wholesale Director and Web Merchant), Analyst, Merchandise Operations and Planning, Sourcing, Quality Assurance, Marketing, and Creative departments. It is an individual contributor role that will not involve supervision.
Performance Measurements:
• Performance will be measured on the successful completions of the following:
• On schedule design and development of best in class products
• Deliver 2D/3D initial concept sketches to support product development
• Quality as measured by returns, as well as feedback from customers, sales personnel in retail and wholesale, and the endorsed guide network
• Cost of goods and sourcing strategies for above categories
General Responsibilities:
• Management of the design and development process of Orvis branded technical apparel in the Fish an Hunt categories for a planned increase in sales and gross margin
• Responsible for driving the design, fit execution and specifications for innovative, technologically advanced products of the highest level
• Interface with the Director of Product Development/Design, sourcing and manufacturing partners to meet product introduction timelines
• Ensure quality at all phases in the development process through product lifecycle
• Interface with internal testing of all products in way that is consistent with our brand standards and work with field testing lead to ensure 90 day field testing is complete prior to PO placement
• Vendor negotiations for costing and implementation of best sources to assure product delivery and quality
• On schedule delivery of photography, show, marketing and rep samples
• Travel to factories, vendors, regional training events and industry trade and sourcing shows
Skill-set/ Qualifications Desired:
• Bachelor’s degree with comprehensive professional experience in all facets of the product design, development and commercialization process, focused training in Industrial Design or apparel design is desired
• 3-5 years of industrial design or apparel design, as well as product development management of performance garments preferred
• Expertise in managing the design phase, visual line planning, and color story recommendations
• Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe illustrator for product design, visual line planning, and color story recommendations
• Intimate working knowledge of apparel design and material constructions techniques within the competitive marketplace
• Exceptional attention to detail and strong follow up
• Ability to anticipate and meet deadlines and to work on multiple projects
• Proven Microsoft Word and Excel skills as well as excellent oral and written communication
• Knowledge of product development process and seasonal cadence, merchandising and assortment planning
• Interest in the outdoor industry; previous experience is desired
• Flexible travel required in this position for shows and events (3-5 weeks/year)
• Must be familiar with the Orvis product line, wing shooting and fly fishing culture and lifestyle. A strong understanding of wing shooting and fly fishing industry is a plus
