BUSINESS IMPACT STATEMENT
As a member of Kohl’s public relations leadership team, the public relations manager is responsible for the development and implementation of holistic, integrated and measurable public relations and corporate communications strategies that support company business objectives and reach key external stakeholders including national, regional and trade print, broadcast and digital media.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Communications strategy and counsel
• Develops strategic public relations and external communications plans that support key company initiatives and corporate reputation programs.
• Implements public relations and communications campaigns, including the development of strategic communications materials (press releases, key messages, Q&As, media training, corporate web articles, social media posts, etc.) national, regional and trade media relations, and other applicable public relations efforts.
• Works in partnership across the broader Kohl’s communications team and Kohl’s marketing organization to align public relations strategies that support the company’s business objectives through holistic communications and marketing initiatives.
• Collaborates with cross-functional partners across the organization to deliver business communications strategies and provide public relations counsel for areas of business including but not limited to legal, finance, human resources, government affairs, real estate, stores, technology, e-commerce, logistics, marketing, merchandising, product development and corporate social responsibility.
Program management
• Leads the implementation of public relations and communications strategies, moving with speed and agility, to manage and evolve the Public Relations team’s efforts.
• Builds and manages relationships with key internal stakeholders to ask questions, make connections, identify business stories and advocate for best-in-class public relations and communications practices.
• Builds and manages relationships with external stakeholders to identify external storytelling opportunities increase awareness and understanding of Kohl’s company initiatives and points of differentiation.
• Partners with external agencies on public relations efforts to support overarching goals.
• Delivers recaps to assess progress against goals, outlining measurable results and key insights for short-term and long-term public relations efforts.
Media and influencer relations
• Identifies and creates timely, relevant external storytelling opportunities that resonate with media.
• Develops strong national, regional and trade media contacts in new and existing Kohl's markets to drive positive press coverage for the Kohl's.
• Creates strategic messaging, media training and public relations counsel to Kohl's executives in preparation for interviews and events with media and influencers.
• Monitors and reports press coverage, including competitive trends and insights.
Addendum
Crisis/Sensitive/SIRT, IR/Finance, Government Relations
• Supports key business areas including issues management, financial communications and government affairs. Experience in one of these areas is required; experience in all of these areas preferred.
• Provides communications counsel on public issues and supports issues management, including background context, strategic recommendations and the creation of media holding statements, key messages and other materials.
• Needs to be curious, courageous and collaborative and importantly, on top of the news of the day.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• 6-8 years of experience in public relations and / or external corporate communications.
• Proven experience with communications strategy development and implementation.
• Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
• Media relations expertise across national, regional and trade print, broadcast and digital media relations experience.
• Ability to manage numerous external communications programs involving many components in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Prior experience managing direct reports and / or managing working teams.
Preferred
• Experience working as part of an in-house corporate public relations team for a large public company and / or retailer.
• Experience working with senior executives to develop and implement strategic external communications initiatives.
• Experience with strategies pertaining to various corporate reputation programs such as executive speakers’ bureaus, influencer programs, editorial content development for corporate website and digital newsletters, corporate social media, corporate awards and rankings, reputational research welcome.
