About the role:
The Editorial Photo Director reports to the Chief Content Officer and partners with the Global Editor In Chief and Executive Creative Director on a regular basis to ensure that all photography throughout Refinery29 is thoughtfully conceptualized and executed. The EPD’s focus will be to continue to push forward Refinery29's visuals so that the brand continues to be the leader in visual storytelling. Within this role you will also manage a team of photo editors across all categories who conceptualize and produce shoots as well as a full team of photo researchers who handle all photo research requests and the photo archive for the entire company. You will also have a core understanding of our branded content business to evolve and grow our photography experiences with our advertisers.
About the team:
Editorial Photo:We conceptualize, commission and produce original editorial photo content across all categories, and find the perfect artful stock photo and visual treatment every time. We oversee Refinery29’s original stock photography creation.
Branded Photo:We collaborate with client services and sales to dissect client objectives and conceptualize, art-direct, and produce photo and multimedia branded programs across all categories and channels.

What you’ll do:
• Hire, manage, and mentor the editorial photography team, including photo editors, who produce and conceptualize original photo shoots, photo research, and archiving.
• Deeply understand our mission and values, ensuring they translate into actionable practices employed by the entire photo team.
• Advance how the Refinery29 brand is expressed through photography by evolving established brand guidelines and continuously exploring new ways to enhance our work in photography.
• Cultivate relationships with leadership across the organization to ensure that the photo team is collaborating efficiently, supporting the business, and has visibility throughout the org.
• Overseeing contracts, rights, accounts, and departmental procedures and negotiations in partnership with our legal team.
• Oversee the photo budget, work with key internal partners to forecast and actualize budgets, anticipate company needs and budget appropriately.
• Oversee photo operations and best practices to help continue a streamlined and effective workflow for all team members in partnership with the Branded Photo Director
• Collaborate and partner with the Branded Photo Director to ensure the photo department feels connected as a unit and can support one another when needed.
• Leading key photo-driven initiatives within the company in partnership with senior leadership.
• Collaborate with the editors on conceptualizing photo projects across categories including but not limited to celebrity, fashion, beauty, wellness, and political shoots.
• Develop and maintain relationships with upcoming photographers who are on the rise as part of the Refinery29 ethos to be a platform for fresh and emerging talent.
• Serve as a brand & photography ambassador to the creative community, championing R29 photo work internally and externally while growing our network
What you have:
• 5+ years of related experience
• Experience managing a team of 5+ people
• Experience working at a Brand, Media Company or Agency (Ideally some combination of the three.)
• Strong management experience overseeing team ranging in skill-set and career level
• Proactive problem solver and great collaborator
• Established relationships with creatives throughout the photo industry
• Deep understanding of photography and shoot production across a range of executions, from big productions to small, across various content categories.
• Ability to craft an opportunity to its highest potential, regardless of budget, with a dedication to excellence.
• Strong industry relationships with photographers, agencies, studios.
• Experience collaborating and managing up and down in an organization,developing strong relationships.
• Hiring, management, and mentorship experience. You can develop and nurture a team.
• The ability to be an example of positive change: experimenting to improve on ideas, concepts, and processes to make creative work stronger.
