POSITION SUMMARY:
The Undergraduate Department of Communications Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for an Assistant Chairperson with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2018. Housed in Pratt’s Design Center alongside Graduate Communications Design, the department is a leading provider of education in the field. Reporting to the Chairperson, the successful candidate will assist with the daily operations of the department. The Assistant Chairperson will be involved with the development, implementation and management of departmental academic affairs to support and improve the educational life of the students, faculty and staff.
Located on Pratt’s historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, and information science, which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist Chair in developing, coordinating and reviewing department curriculum that aligns with the department’s mission and learning outcomes as well as ensure uniformity across sections, appropriate course sequencing, etc.
• Assist Chair in developing and coordinating program assessment activities
• Assist Chair with the recruitment, selection and retention of faculty and staff
• Assist Chair in planning course schedules, course offerings, and faculty assignments
• Plan and coordinate various end-of-semester, mid-program and end-of-degree reviews as well as internal and external exhibition events
• Work with Chair and office staff to streamline work flow, project management and communication with large faculty and student body
• Assist Chair with coordination of admissions activities including revising and updating the Student Handbook and website
• Advise undergraduate students as needed
• Coordinate review of undergraduate transfer students
• Serve on department, school and Institute committees and represent the department at various meetings, workshops and forums on and off campus
• Maintain (both digital and physical) of student archives
• Assist in the management of departmental facilities and space
• Assist in promotional material and platforms for the department
• Coordinate curricula and facilities with Graduate Communications Design
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
An MFA or MDes in communication design, visual communication, graphic design, interactive design, or related discipline
Experience and Skills:
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 3 years experience at the undergraduate level (part-time or full-time)
• 2-5 years of recognized, current professional practice and/or creative scholarship in the field of communication design
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated excellent collaboration, management and leadership skills; ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively
• Understanding of historical and critical perspectives on contemporary communication design including issues surrounding globalism, sustainability, technological advancement, and equity and inclusion
• Expertise in a broad range of methodologies, concepts, techniques related to contemporary communication design practice
• Some experience, preferably 3 years, in academic administration and/or coordination
• Perform all other related activities as required
Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in the practice and education of communication design. Excellent organizational, communications and interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop rapport with a diverse faculty and student body are required.
This is a 12-month per year administrative appointment. Teaching one course per term is encouraged and supported with additional salary for this work as per contact hours of the course(s).
SALARY:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
