About the Role:
As Executive Design Director at Refinery29, you are responsible for how the brand’s mission and values translate to design, overseeing the brand expression across all touchpoints and channels.

What you’ll do:
• Mentor and influence a large team of Creative Directors, Art Directors, and Designers working across Content, UX, and Events; directly managing the Content design group.
• Partner with Executive Creative Director and key executives on the overall vision for the visual expression of the brand organizationally and strategically - including a deepened understanding brand health and articulation, external communication, brand architecture and evolution
• Innovate on tools and formats for brand education across the company, developing bespoke yet repeatable workshops for teams as needed
• Push the brand and how it’s experienced into new places - innovating on the types of products and experiences R29 pushes out into the world
• Oversight on multi-faceted and multimedia projects, with the brand and mission in mind
• Serve as a brand ambassador for the brand on other teams including UX and Video, working with key leaders on both teams to ensure the creative vision of the company is translating over and is mutually beneficial
• Partner with Marketing Solutions to innovate on game-changing brand partnerships online and offline that keep our clients excited and coming back with an additional focus on mobile/social and video
• Amplify our place in the industry as a first-class creative workplace
• Similarly, scout and attract key talent for staff, freelance and project-based collaboration opportunities - across design, photo, video, and UX
• Represent R29 Design & Creative in the industry by identifying events, conferences, speaking engagements to attend on behalf of the brand
• Work closely with ECD to systematically inspire the team through historically traditional meetings/workshops and new ways to share work - monthly mood boards, field trips, links
• Work closely with ECD to identify goals for key team members’ and areas of growth
• Manage and oversee the budget in conjunction with tracking allocated resources and metrics to leverage future business goals
• Provide onboarding, mentorship, continual education for latest R29 on brand evolution, process, and performance to design team as well as other departments (ie: UK/DE, Social, Editorial, UX/Product, and Video)
• Manage the quality and ensure consistent, strong design output across platforms for a range of creative work (homepage to mobile, new emerging platforms, and global sites)
• Identify key collaborators and contributors across mediums, including but not limited to, photographers, illustrators and motion graphics artists, and 3D artists expanding our freelance bench and network
• All while fostering a thriving, inspirational, and immensely creative work environment for the team
What you have:
• 10+ years experience in a design role working in the digital space
• Bachelor's Degree in graphic design, branding & visual communication, architecture, industrial design, or digital media, plus significant experience demonstrating creative sophistication in concepts and design
• Direct experience with designing for and understanding the rapidly evolving digital media environment including emerging technologies and platforms and experiences
• Deep creative leadership and design management experience, ideally within large organizations, developing people and their careers on teams of 10+
• Proven care and attention to the craft including the ability to demonstrate, through portfolio and conversation, a well-developed understanding of good design fundamentals like color, type, hierarchy, motion, accessibility and scalable design systems
• Experience creating a culture of constructive critique and deploying effective design methodologies like creative concepting, user-centric design thinking, and prototyping
• Understanding of and ideally direct experience with iterative product design, development and continuous deployment
• Strong desire to develop creatively and push the R29 visual brand forward
• Deep knowledge of and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Products (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Etc.) (Keynote and Powerpoint familiarity is a plus).
