POSITION SUMMARY:
The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute, an internationally recognized professional school offering B. Arch, M. Arch and M.S. degrees, invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the Department of Undergraduate Architecture. We seek a faculty member who can assume a leadership role in the Department’s design curriculum across the five-year program, incorporating a diverse cultural perspective in the context of architectural critical discourse. The ideal candidate will be a motivated design studio instructor who can teach students over a range of levels, from foundation to advanced design, and can demonstrate an integration of social and cultural criteria within the design studio context as well as the required core curriculum. The appointment is scheduled to begin in August 2018.
Our academic environment is one that continues to evolve quickly in the areas referenced which are making an impact on education. We are interested in developing students who can critically engage the challenges that these topics present to us and the future of our architectural environment.
Located on a 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, Pratt Institute recognizes the strength that stems from a diversity of perspectives, ideas, backgrounds, approaches and experiences. We aspire to continue to grow as a place that always welcomes and encourages individuals of all backgrounds to contribute to and be part of the Pratt culture.
CONTEXT
The Undergraduate Architecture Program is a Professional Degree Program which prioritizes inventive design and critical thinking together with professional knowledge and skills. With 150 full and part-time faculty members, the Program serves a diverse student body of approximately 650 students and awards an accredited five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree. The Department is committed to building diversity in our curriculum and among our faculty and staff and seeks applicants who can contribute to the furtherance of these goals.
Our curriculum structure over five years is as follows:
• Our foundation year is an introduction to architecture and critical thinking.
• The second year integrates the critical parameters of site and program, while offering insights into precedent and material practice.
• The third year is the challenge of the Integrated Design Studio; the project directly applies core lessons from building systems & environmental technology, professional practice and construction documentation.
• The faculty driven advanced studios in fourth year allow students to explore the core studios through a specialized lens: independent studio options in urban design, speculative propositions, design/build or an advanced examination of integrated design.
• The fifth-year student driven Degree Project extends for the full year. The Fall semester is dedicated to research and the spring is about applying that research to the development of a terminal project.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
