Technical Designer, Global Supply Chain - The Underwear Group
The Technical Designer is a brand facing position that partners with Design to receive design intent. They must fully understand each individual style to enable communication to the off shore Technical Designers enabling style execution off-shore via various pipelines available to them. The pipelines range from a no touch pipeline that empowers the off-shore team to create tech packs themselves thus partnering with suppliers to execute styles and approve them accordingly to a high touch pipeline where the tech packs are created in New York so the off-shore team can send proto samples and/or fit samples for fitting with design. They must adhere to brand calendars and targets. They must be able to effectively communicate design intent via tech packs created by them or via conference calls / video conference calls to an audience where English is their 2nd language. Fitting of garments (cutting / pinning / draping) and recapping those fittings is a mandatory skill.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE JOB:
• Sketching- both flat sketches and detail sketches in Adobe Illustrator.
• Patterns- Technical Designer must be able to communicate pattern corrections verbally in fittings and in writing via fit comments (includes being able to illustrate them in fit comments. While this position is not a pattern making position, it is necessary to be able to know the cause and effect of pattern corrections so that communication of the “desired fix” can be executed by the Pattern Maker.
• Garment Specifications- Technical Designer must be able to define the fit of a garment by creating spec sheets in a tech pack. Measurements must make sense and add up to a pattern that is feasible.
• Create and maintain the tools of the department and distribute to the Business Partners in Design and/or Sourcing to ensure utilization each season. These tools include construction standards, Block Body Spreadsheets, etc…
• Host meetings with design and merchants to drive alignment on brand / department standards at all levels.
• Systems set up to function to the standards of the brand / department. Systems include tech pack templates, tracking reports, block body spreadsheets etc…
• Receive styles from design and drive conversation to fully understand design intent calling out where standards are being deviated from and persuading (where possible) back to standard.
• Be independent in the hosting of fittings with design. All aspects of the fitting must be accomplished to enable execution afterwards. (cutting, pinning, draping, digital pictures, fit 360 where available, cost engineering as needed.
• Fit comments must include a robust recap with Adobe Illustrator sketches.
• Tracking of work into and out of the department via excel spread sheets determined by leadership.
• Cross Team Work- While Technical Designers are dedicated to a brand for the majority of their time, they must be willing to help other Brand Tech Design Teams during down time as instructed by leadership.
• Creation and maintenance of libraries as needed for fit and construction to the department standards.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Experience:
• 5 years minimum related experience to working with patterns and design teams
• 3 years’ experience with Adobe Illustrator- this is mandatory. Candidate must be fluent and fast with sketching
• Experience illustrating pattern corrections using drawing software
• Experience using excel and word- formula knowledge a must
Education:
Bachelors of Science preferred or equivalent manufacturing experience and/or working with a design team to execute design intent.

• Basic textiles and fabric layout (engineering) knowledge
