Principal iOS Engineer - Nike Digital Engineering
Description
Scope and Responsibilities:
As a Principal Engineer, you join the ranks of an exclusive group of engineers at Nike. Simply put, you are the best of the best. Along with your years of experience, you will likely have earned an advanced degree, such as a PHD or Masters. Your knowledge of your chosen technology stack is second to none. Your expertise is always consulted whenever major architectural decisions are considered. Your personal velocity is often equivalent to three or four engineers. You are counted upon to solve the toughest challenges that teams face, and as such, you may float from team to team, helping individual squads solve software challenges. Your contributions are so invaluable, you will typically report directly to a Director or Senior Director. Along with your contributions at Nike, you may also make contributions to open source projects, or even lead an open source project as the primary contributor.
Goals:
• Write code quickly, with industry-defining test coverage
• Take on the most difficult coding objectives personally, with unparalleled velocity
• Quickly assess a project, team, or codebase and provide suggestions on how to improve
• Leverage your experience to quickly refactor a project or codebase to correct architectural missteps
• Your code rarely includes bugs
• Establish and enforce engineering best practices for NDE
• Lead the efforts on shared libraries, shared components, or shared frameworks
• Lead or host local meetups in your areas of interest
• Serve as the voice of truth for your chosen technology stack
• Be open, approachable, and available to NDE’s ~1,000 software engineers
• Lead local meetups and NDE-sponsored events, sometimes sponsored by Nike
• Actively participate in PRs, code reviews, etc. Be the voice of reason and resolve conflicts
• Contribute or lead open-source projects under the Nike moniker
• Routinely demonstrate your personal velocity, by developing solutions in days instead of weeks
Qualifications
Evidence you’ve mastered the role:
• Writes excellent code
• Writes excellent documentation
• Establishes NDE’s Definition of Done, acceptable test coverage, etc
• Leads one or more shared components at Nike
• Leads one or more open-source projects under the Nike moniker
• Consistently completes multiple user stories per sprint
• Communicates and collaborates with Director or Senior Director to ensure project deliverables are being met
• Sapper – efficiently moves from one team to the next, solving the most critical problems, shoring up the team’s architectural approach, and preparing them for continued success
Additional skills/attributes required:
• Able to successfully work and collaborate with multiple, diverse stakeholders.
• Able to drive projects to completion and meet deadlines.
