The role of the Communications function at Nike is to establish and strengthen authentic connections with audiences around the globe, through the lens of innovation and sport. We focus on premium brand stories related to our products, categories and athletes; we manage corporate reputation and brand equity; and we engage, inspire and motivate internal and external communities.
We are seeking an experienced Corporate Communications and Media Relations Director who can help lead and drive our North America corporate and media strategy based in NYC.
Aligning closely with the Global Communications team, you’ll be responsible for coordinating and supporting corporate planning and strategy development with a strong focus on developing long-term, authentic media relationships to drive Nike’s innovation and corporate story. The role will include development and execution of corporate and innovation story plans, issues management, media outreach and messaging. The candidate should have strong existing relationships with journalists across business, sport, innovation, finance and consumer media.
As a member of the North America media relations team you will work with both North America Communications and Brand teams and also have close ties to the Global Corporate Communications team based at Nike’s WHQ in Beaverton, Oregon. Ideally you will have a background in working for a publicly traded company with knowledge of financial communications, SEC guidelines and the annual reporting process. An ability to work within a global matrix organization, contributing to cross-functional plans and being a proven media spokesperson would be valued.
Key responsibilities include:
• Proactively building and maintaining authentic and strategic media relationships with print and digital publications, broadcast media and other key media influencers most relevant to Nike.
• Help lead the execution of targeted media coverage across print, digital, social and broadcast media.
• Developing innovative and targeted digital communication strategies, messaging and tactics that engage and deliver against Nike’s target consumers to showcase Nike as a leading innovation brand.
• Developing and executing media messages including brand, innovation, sustainability, athlete and issues management where relevant.
• Supporting and aligning with category communications campaigns and events where appropriate.
• Preparing Nike spokespeople with messages and training for interviews as necessary.
• Creating briefing materials for executives, tracking timelines and budget and managing internal and external approval processes.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree (minimum) in journalism, PR, English, communications, business, or related field required.
• 10+ years professional experience in high profile corporate communications roles supporting globally branded organizations.
• Management skills include high-profile communications, strategic planning, budgeting and creative solutions.
• Proven ability to communicate plans across a complex matrix on a corporate, regional and functional basis.
• Experience initiating and driving the ideation process contributing meaningful, innovative strategies to the business.
• Successful experience in working effectively at senior level brand management and a proven ability to provide guidance and direction to peers.
• On the ground media/PR experience with ability to communicate clearly as a company spokesperson both on and off camera.
• Strong existing relationships and contacts with Senior North America media and influencers across different sectors: business, news, finance, tech/innovation, with a proven background in pitching media and securing in-depth stories.
• Successful experience in a management position with proven ability to provide direction and leadership to others is preferred.
• Experience leading Communications strategy for major events.
• Deep understanding of evolving consumer communications environment and digital landscape.
