Director - Corporate Development (MP&A)
Overview:
• The Strategy & Central Planning team is responsible for conducting analytics that lead to uncovering insights to support the senior team in making strategic decisions. The Central Planning team will play a key role and in partnership with the finance team in developing the annual inventory purchasing budget & monthly forecast for sales, gross margin, and inventory metrics, while also helping drive profitable in-season inventory management.
• This team is small and highly collaborative. Members of this team work cross-functionally across the J. Crew organization including Merchandising, MP&A, Marketing, Store Operations, Finance and Supply Chain. This position is based in our New York office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work independently or as a member of small teams to conduct rigorous, fact-based research and analysis to advise and work with business leads to understand where they see opportunity; assess business performance and the market place to surface additional independent opportunities while clearly defining the opportunity, strategy, plan, and financial impact.
• Take responsibility for projects from conception to completion, with guidance from senior management and business leads.
• Develop, write and present recommendations to the leadership team
Participate in cross-functional teams to evaluate opportunities and drive results with partners including Merchandising, MP&A, Marketing, Store Operations, and Finance.
• Take initiative and explore ways to better understand competitors, industry performance and macro-economic trends as relevant for development of financial plans.
• Keep business partners updated on emerging issues and company strategies and direction.
• Partner with MIO/IT team to refine tools and processes and improve the overall effectiveness of the organization.
• Partner with cross-functional team to develop sales and inventory targets that support the Company’s Annual/quarterly Plans.
• Create season code, reg vs. md, pricing and sourcing plans that reconcile merchandising strategies with the total company financial goals. Take the lead in developing top down view of assortment plan, store clusters and flow strategy to pass on to Merch Planning
• Develop top down in-season forecasts that drive the cross-functional team to maximize inventory productivity and sales/margin while clearly communicating risks and opportunities to the Company forecast.
• Deliver consistent and compelling weekly business updates that provide concise, fact-based diagnostics regarding business performance, thereby facilitating timely decision-making.
Experience and Qualifications
• 5-10 years of directly applicable experience in an analytical role in a consulting, corporate or entrepreneurial environment. Inventory management and/or retail and e-commerce planning and forecasting experience.
• Clear evidence of strong analytical, problem solving and logical thinking skills as well as analytical project work including financial and sensitivity models, market tests, data exploration, etc.
• Demonstrated strength in synthesizing datasets such as transactional data, customer data or other operational datasets into actionable business insights that support recommendations.
• Strong intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn quickly. Highly motivated to solve challenging business problems and have a direct impact on significant business decisions.
• Experience with retail, consumer products and/or specialty specialty apparel required.
• Analysts are expected to be highly proficient in Excel. Experience with QlikView, Tableau or other analytics/visualization tools preferred. SQL and/or R experience a plus.
• Ability to work with a large amount of detail without losing sight of the big picture.
• Emphasis on interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead influential conversations and to articulate financial concepts to business partners outside of finance in a clear and concise manner.
