NHL League Director, adidas League Licensing
Purpose
Day-to-day management & leadership of adidas’ NHL partnership/license agreements
Collaborate with Head of adidas Hockey to build strategic plan to leverage NHL partnership globally.
Ensure commercial effectiveness across all product categories and lead the development of tactical and communication strategies to support our businesses goals
Support and lead the NHL business through cross-functional collaboration and execution of the key business strategies for the adidas brand
Key Responsibilities
• Contribute to development of Hockey BU Strategic Business Plan (SBP)
• Serve as primary day-to-day contact with NHL licensing team for all product, brand, identity, grassroots, and marketing related initiatives
• Gather and analyze relevant market and consumer intelligence to identify “new” business opportunities across all apparel and headwear categories
• Act as central hub for NHL business workstreams and calendars responsible for disseminating relevant details as necessary throughout the organization
• Liaison between merchandising, Sports Marketing, and Sales to drive new opportunities, communicate calendars, launch plans, and go-to-market strategies
• Build and maintain relationships with NHL member Clubs at executive levels in addition to team concessionaires
• Own launch/deployment calendars globally for all NHL product drops/uniform unveils, player trades, free agency, and special event activities (i.e. St. Patrick’s Day, Military Nights, Awareness/Retirement nights)
• Responsible for NHL licensed sales & margin targets
• Collaborate with US Sports finance to manage sales and royalty reports with licensors
• Negotiate additional strategic alliances to complement NHL rights (i.e. sublicenses, ex-player deals, NHLPA relationship)
• Ensure solid communication and collaboration with the functional teams, leagues, sales and brands to ensure business objectives are met
• Collaborate with brand communications to deliver integrated marketing and communication concepts that support League events & partnership
• Analysis of the business and product category performance to identify opportunities, risks and initiate quick action.
• Guide the teams to ensure proper implementation of the businesses strategy
• Guide sales in the development of strategic programs and ensure proper implementation of segmentation, distribution and GTM strategies
• Financial accountability: reporting, budgeting and revenue plan building
• Attend key product milestone meetings
• Collaboration on marketing support materials (i.e. collateral, hangtags, sales meeting imagery, etc.)
• Lead integration between sales, product marketing and operations
• Expert on all contract matters, rights, etc.
• Lead for all trade shows, sales meetings and external marketing events
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
• Strong industry knowledge
• Need cross functional experience (merchandising, marketing and sales)
• Strong understanding of league business: consumers, accounts, commercial needs, etc.
• Track record of strong business judgement and analyse data to improve strategic decision making
• Ability to build relationships with executive leadership, across multiple internal functions and licensing partners
• Strong negotiation skills as related to contracts, partnerships, rights, etc.
• Skill in collaborating and influencing in a heavily matrixed organization
• Strong management skills, proven leadership and the ability to develop and direct a team
• Excellent follow up and communications skills
• Ability to steer implementation of creative marketing plans
Qualifications
1. Minimum 8 years progressive experience in product/merchandising, marketing and/or
sales combined
2. High level of experience in leading a multifunctional organization
3. Hockey experience an asset
4. Experience in sports licensing, league/Club relationships
5. Track record of leveraging partnerships
6. Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s/MBA preferred
Language Skills
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Reasoning Ability
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
