Purpose
Design innovative concepts for sustainable executions of Footwear and/or Apparel Materials and processes.
Key Accountabilities
Creative Direction
• Seeks out and has strong understanding of information needed to design athlete and brand relevant product through the lens of sustainability. Should include all possible sources to gain this information:
• Sustainable conferences, events, and publications
• Trade fairs, cultural events, and sporting events, athlete insights
• Trade publications, general interest press, trend services, fashion and sportswear magazines and websites
• Store checks, market visits, and team travel as provided
• Industry news in Material innovation and manufacturing
• Share and distribute findings
• Contributes to Creative Direction within the following topics:
• Sustainable Footwear and/or Apparel Materials
• Sustainable processes, executions, and insights
• Seasonal Material narrative
• Contributes to aforementioned design direction by, but not limited to:
• Contribute in trend environmental forecasting content relevant to our consumer and brand
• Contribute in providing technical advanced Material ideation and concepts using functional insights and a strong aesthetic eye
• Works closely with various internal and external partners. This includes but is not limited to:
• Collaboration and critiquing within Creative Direction’s Colour, Material, and Graphics teams
• Collaboration and clear communication with suppliers and development
• Collaboration with Horizontal Sustainability Developers and Team
• Collaboration and information sharing with Business Unit Colour and Material Designers and Footwear/Apparel Designers
• Acts as a conduit to all Marketing, Product Managers, Colour and Material Designers within the Business Units
• Works closely with Development in development of sustainability excellence in process, manufacturing, and costing
• Assists in communicating inspiration and storytelling to Design and Marketing
• Works closely with Testing to ensure quality
• Works closely with Sourcing and Development to aid in scalability
• Builds top-line strategy into sustainability material concepts. This includes but is not limited to:
• Owning holistic overview, rollout, and commercialization of material allocation to Business Units
• Continually innovates material concepts to create generations of technology
Materials Excecution
• Designs, innovates, and develops sustainable Footwear or Apparel Material with input from Creative Direction, Design, Marketing, and Development. This includes but is not limited to:
• Seasonal prep and research stated above
• Design technical and innovative materials with attention to look, feel, and function
• Create material innovations with consideration of sustainability and efficiencies
• Assists in creating design presentations; both physical and digital
• Exploratory process to reach final solution
• Creates Material drawings and tech packs
Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities
• Computer Skills
• Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop
• Power Point/Key Note
• Apple Mac Operating system
• 3D not required, but beneficial
• Ability to understand design concepts and think conceptually
• Ability to create designs that functionally innovate for the athlete’s needs
• Ability to operate in a fast pace, ever changing work environment
• Works well in a team environment. This position requires employee to engage with many stakeholders, as well as manage various information and relationships
• Ability and desire to push themselves, others, and the brand forward
• Ability to influence and collaborate with key internal and external business partners
• Understanding of brand history and current positioning
• Understanding of the adidas inline creation process
• Understanding of marketplace (footwear and apparel) in all formats (streetwear/fashion) for our consumer
• Working knowledge of the technical facets of material. Including but not limited to:
• Technical terminology
• Machinery
• Manufacturing
• Costing
• Construction
• Development process
• Understanding and direct knowledge of sustainability in product industry
Qualifications
1. Preferably a BSc or MSc in Textiles, Textile Design, Textile Management, or Bachelor Degree in similar design fields
2. Practical experience in textile, footwear, fashion or and design relevant environment
3. Thorough knowledge of art and design with clear understanding of visual design or any design related environment
4. 3 years relevant work experience in sustainability at a product creation company, trend agency, or manufacturer
5. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for degree
