The Associate Merchandise Buyer is a key member in the merchandising organization. They are responsible for the top line growth of the organization as well as the profitability of the business. They must be creative as well as analytical and have the ability to not only design product, but the ability to strategically plan its execution and assort it into the business model. The merchant interfaces with all areas of the business both internal and external; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly communicate are a must. Ballard is a multi channel retailer and a merchant must be well versed in marketing to all channels; catalog, web and retail. This position requires international travel.
Key Responsibilities include:
Product Development
• Determine your category needs and collaboratively design products that maintain the integrity of our brand.
• Work with international sourcing team to provide guidance, timely completion of projects.
• Domestic and international travel to factories to review developed product and introduce new opportunities.
Assortment Management
• Maintain appropriate assortment for designated category for each book.
• Monitor your website category assortment.
• Fit assortment to the Ballard aesthetic.
• Fit assortment to the total mix of specific book including seasonality.
• Determine pricing for product in all 3 channels (catalog, internet, and retail).
• Fulfill projected volume and page space for category.
• Profitability
Creative
• Present your category introductions for use in each new book.
• Present your copy info to copy writer for new product.
• Maintain your photo samples used for creating images for books.
• Review digital/mechanical/color spreads and website for correct use of images and copy.
Book Development
• Work with SVP of Brand Development & DMM to help coordinate category in each book.
• Maintain appropriate space, position for products.
• Determine key product attributes and options to maximize volume per spread.
Website Development
• Work with Digital team to merchandise website homepage and category pages.
• Monitor website ratings and reviews for customer feedback.
• Determine key products from your category to be used in email, paid search and other eCommerce Programs.
Assortment Development
• Utilize web site to develop product options for growth in category.
• Use domestic and international trade shows to find new resources to enhance product assortment.
Inventory Control
• Coordinate with inventory control for projected sales.
• Work with inventory control to handle overstocks.
• Work with inventory control to handle discontinued merchandise.
Requirements:
• Strong analytical and communication skills
• Strong relationship building between multiple departments
• 3-5 years Buying experience
• Extremely organized, with incredible attention to detail
• Domestic and International Travel
• High degree of proficiency in PC applications, especially Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Fluent in multi-tasking within a fast-paced environment
