SUMMARY
As a member of the JanSport Research Design & Development, the Materials Designer will lead in the creation and execution of key materials stories across all product categories. The Designer will be a key member of the CGM (Color, Graphics, and Materials) team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspiration / Research:
• Research trends/material innovations and communicate to design team at beginning of season through themes based on trend stories.
• Build relationships with Material Ops team and material mills to acquire fresh/new materials before competitors.
• Work with Material Ops team to build material library and fair each season.
• Bring an innovative vision to all product collections with fresh materials.
• Work with Line Managers and Designers on merchandising of material stories.
• Attend tradeshows and material shows to understand competition and trend direction.
• Travel to material and trim mills/vendors to learn more about construction abilities/develop relationships.
Design:
• Provide inspiration for graphics to print designers for materials.
• Work with category designers to develop new fabrics.
• Create fabric swatches in Photoshop in order to create cads for multiple bags.
• Engineer graphic concepts on to silhouettes.
• Able to contribute to the print design work load by designing prints, when necessary.
Processes & Procedures:
• Provide a shared folder system between designers and developers for easy access to artwork between teams.
• Manage JanSport Materials Library & Workspace.
• Bi-weekly checkpoint meetings between RDD and Sourcing.
Coordination:
• Main point of contact between Material Operations team and RDD team on material info and testing info.
• Work with Merchandizers of each line to fulfill material/trim seasonal needs.
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
• BA/BS degree in Design, or equivalent combination of experience.
• 5+ years’ work experience with textile and/or graphic design.
• Excellent skills in Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, and InDesign.
• Strong understanding of textile printing techniques.
• Strong material knowledge.
• High attention to detail.
• Travel required: 15%
