A Senior Director within the Nordstrom Technology organization helps create an inspiring workplace where talented people are empowered to drive amazing customer experiences and business results. This key leader influences the organization through direct leadership and sets the strategic direction for a division or area. The Senior Director is an influential leader with broad and deep technical knowledge and a clear line of sight into how the organization’s work advances business strategy.
The Senior Director of Engineering will directly support and mentor large teams of engineers and engineering managers focused on building tools and platforms that can "power" the rest of Nordstrom Technology and includes a focus on standards, technology support and engineering tools and experience. This role partners closely with Product and Program Management to create the technology platform vision and roadmap, and with technology and operational delivery teams to deliver that vision. Additional responsibilities include planning and capital management in conjunction with Finance. This role and team focuses on engineering standards and partners with all technology and operational delivery teams.
The Senior Director role requires a holistic perspective on developer experience and is passionate and well-versed in helping lead and support the establishment of “Voice of the Customer”, “Design Thinking”, “Product Mindset”, “Agile Development”, “DevOps” and “Client Success” philosophies throughout the lifecycle of platform design, development, engineering and support.
A Day in the Life…
This individual is responsible for strategically managing the Engineering Platform program. The ideal Sr. Director has the demonstrated ability to think strategically and drive the delivery of the portfolio roadmap, including organizing, prioritizing and measuring results. They will be responsible for leading the business strategy, partnering closely with numerous technology delivery teams, and will determine needs for hiring a team to support the work. This position is supported by the VP of Engineering.
Responsibilities:
• Has full leadership responsibility for all teams under division or area
• Drives organizational structures and talent management plans to meet needs of organization
• Provides a balance of technical leadership and business judgment
• Make decisions that directly impact Nordstrom technology strategy
• Applies a systematic analytical process to executive decision making
• Empowers teams to be accountable for decisions through clear definition of boundaries/areas of ownership for decisions
• Demonstrates bias towards action
• Helps identify areas of opportunity and defines actionable plans to create solutions in these areas
• Develops, measures and monitors key metrics for organizational and technology success
• Develops organizational structures to support organizational strategy and matches individual’s talents to implement strategy
• Provides coaching and mentorship beyond team
• Identifies and develops leaders
• Influences others to achieve outcomes even when not in control
• Translates changes and strategy to structure ensuring forward progress
• Able to help teams align to changing priorities and coaches teams and peer through change
• Understands own and constituent’s biases/agendas with changes and successfully navigates to resolution to achieve results
• Fosters cultures of continuous improvement through mentoring, feedback and metrics
• Sets clear and measurable quality goals for an organization in a data-driven fashion
• Solves technical challenges within the org through applying current industry standards
• Designs strategies and motivates/drives teams around plans to resolve changes
• Has broad and deep Technology knowledge coupled with equivalent knowledge of the Technology activities across business
• Communicates a compelling vision and line of sight into how the organization’s work advances strategy
• Effectively incorporates storytelling to help reinforce key messages and increase engagement across organization
This position may be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
