REPORTS TO:
Senior Vice President, Design
OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
The Designer is responsible for creating original concepts that bring the vision of the brand to life through innovative, trend and brand-right designs that encompass style, color and fabric as a result of interpreting fashion trends. The Designer designs sketches and makes seasonal presentations of proposed designs. Primary role is to work within the line plan to design merchandise that is consistent with the brand strategy.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure company objectives are met by helping create product that can drive sales and profitability.
• Lead the development of the complete concept for the season and adapt it appropriately to design category.
• Guided by seasonal concepts, identify and develop key colors, fabrications, silhouettes and trims for development of the complete concept for the season
• Review the line plan with the merchants and agree on overall direction and content of the line for a season.
• Create designs based on merchant’s line plan and incorporate feedback for finalization.
• Present line to Merchants in sample form at Presentation and Buy Meetings.
• Partner with Production and Sourcing to design merchandise that fits within the costing parameters.
• Develop strong partnerships with key business partners to ensure alignment (Merchandising, Technical Design).
• Continuously seek new ways to understand the business; Strengthen knowledge of the NYCO customer by spending time in New York & Company stores.
• Foster a team environment in which information flows freely and decision making is based on a win-win philosophy; leverage resources to achieve common organizational goals.
Required Experience:
REQUIREMENTS:
• 5-8 years of experience.
• Excellent design and sketching skills.
• Strong fashion and creative senses; keen trend awareness.
• Proven track record in a design position in a comparable retail or manufacturing environment.
• Strong Illustrator and Excel skills.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong presentation skills
• Ability to work well within a team-based environment.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree in Design.
