PURPOSE OF ROLE:
This position will coordinate indirect tax matters for Lowe’s related to state and local sales and use, value-added tax, gross receipts tax, real and personal property, escheatment, business licenses, and other similar international, state, or local jurisdictional taxes applicable to Company business activities.
The primary purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with state and local sales & use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheat laws. The successful candidate will need to have project management experience working across functions to influence business partners, operations, business processes, and procedures. This includes accounting for sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheats and ensuring the accounting practices are in accordance with US GAAP, are completed in a timely manner, and are reported and paid correctly and efficiently. This role also has the responsibility to prevent penalties associated with failure to timely and accurately report and remit taxes, deficiencies related to accounting for sales & use and property taxes resulting in material misstatements for SEC financial statement purposes (10-k), and incorrect taxation at the point of sale leading to tax assessments or litigation. This role is considered a technical expert and advises business partners and team members in technical best practices.
RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENTS:
• Serves as a primary contact for the enterprise related to sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheats matters including M&A, contract negotiations, new businesses, etc.
• Acts as the liaison between tax authorities and the company related to sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheats for audit defense and litigation
• Works with various operational groups to conduct sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheats planning in order to identify new opportunities; Analyzes tax jurisdictions and determines favorable approach
• Monitors legislative developments for impacts on Lowe’s and implements changes as necessary, working with Government Relations to influence proposed legislation
• Maintains POS taxation accuracy from customer complaints, utilizing team conducted research and findings to provide technical input, recommendations for resolution, and to connect resolution to broader business impact (Over $4 billion in sales tax collection)
• Oversees the obtaining and delivery of business licenses including annual renewals, licenses for new products or store locations, research conducted on required licenses, and implementation approach
• Sets the strategy for appeals real and personal property tax valuations, working with other members of the team for technical application
• Ensures adequate SOX controls are in place regarding sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses and escheats laws
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance
• 10+ years of experience in tax and/or accounting (public or private). Masters in accounting or tax can be substituted for experience
• 10+ years experience in retail tax and/or sales tax
• Master's Degree Accounting, Tax, CPA, or MBA
• Experience in property tax
