Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS (“JLABS”) is a division of Johnson & Johnson Innovation (“JJI”). JJI JLABS is recruiting a Senior Director, Strategic Planning and Projects (SDSPP) to be located in South San Francisco, CA.

JLABS (“JLABS”) is the external R&D engine of Johnson & Johnson, catalyzing a community of entrepreneurs in healthcare, operating a network of life science incubators focusing and accelerating emerging technologies through its development, and supporting the portfolio to successful partnering and funding.
Working under the Global Head of JLABS and across the JLABS Leadership Team the Senior Director, Strategic Planning and Projects (SDSPP) will lead and facilitate the JLABs strategic planning process. The SDSPP will be directly responsible for enabling JLABS to achieve it core business objectives along with the development and oversight of core operational platforms. This will include leading the leadership team in defining JLABS short and long-term strategic objectives, inline with the JJI and JLABS strategy and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Portfolio Management. As well as managing the leadership team to defined metrics to ensure timely progress and success against identified metrics. In support of this, the SDSPP will also ensure timely, accurate and complete reporting on the operating condition of the company is prepared and provided in support of strategic planning and annual reporting.
Additionally, the SDSPP will oversee the JLABS program management teams. The SDSPP will lead the annual project planning process to evaluate the project vision, scope, budget, time and resourcing needs and identify the strategic projects and programs for annual investment. Moreover, this role will oversee the team responsible for assessing, designing, developing, and operationalizing projects across the organization as well as managing key strategic projects and the overall project management and program management methodology and processes.
The SDSPP will develop strategic plans, facilitate planning and review meetings, build communication materials, design and execute stakeholder engagement plans to drive alignment within JLABS and across GEI, developing pragmatic, executable project plans and being responsible for the management of these, including accountability for successful project delivery (on time and budget) with demonstrated business impact.
Primary responsibilities include:
Strategy Development
Lead development of JLABS 3 and 5-year strategic plans in line with the broader GEI strategy. Contribute to the shaping of project and program strategies and vision. Articulate creative ideas for advancing the goals and succinctly document these and ensure stakeholder alignment of strategy and vision.
Project Management / Strategy and Project Execution Leadership: Oversee the annual project planning process to define projects, evaluate projects scope/resource/budget needs, and determine projects for investment. Partners with key stakeholders and lead effective execution of projects and programs both directly and through oversight of the program management teams. Prepares realistic project plans, leads and monitors project progress, proactively identify risks and risk mitigation strategies and prepare and deliver progress reports to stakeholders and management. Diplomatically addressing conflicts, delays, and risks and overseeing the escalation and resolution process.
Facilitation: The SDSSP will plan and run effective meetings and workshops to achieve strategic planning, annual project planning, and as a part of project execution. This includes identifying key sponsors and stakeholders, soliciting input as appropriate, setting clear agendas, ensuring transparency of decisions and actions and related communications to be all involved stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement Planning: The SDSP will be adept at identifying and engaging key stakeholders to ensure alignment, understand possible issues which might affect project progress or identify possible sources of conflict and derailment which might lead to a “no go” for projects and programs. The SDSP will further be skilled and building the necessary relationships to manage and mitigate these issues to resolution ensuring projects and programs are successfully launched and operationalized.
Qualifications
• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required
• An advanced degree e.g. MBA, master’s degree, PhD or MD is preferred
• A minimum of 8 years of project management experience is required
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in leading strategic planning is required
• A minimum of 3 years of program management or PMO experience is required
• A minimum of 3 years of leading annual project planning is required
• PMP or PgMP certification or similar is preferred
• Experience managing global teams is required
• Experience leading matrixed teams without direct authority is preferred
• The ability to handle complex tasks independently yet knows when to seek guidance is required
• Strong analytical skills with a solution-oriented mindset is required
• A strong track record of successfully handling multiple priorities and working independently is required
• Strong oral and written communication skills are required
• This position is based in South San Francisco and will require domestic and international travel up to 25%.
