Major Responsibilities
The Senior Director, Product Development, is the key functional leader responsible for the brand’s product development strategy including core business, new market expansion, new and adjacent product categories. This person will be responsible for ensuring successful execution for all core global product launches and exploration, development and execution of new adjacent product category launches. This role will strategically drive and tactically oversee all new product development initiatives and help shape the long range portfolio roadmap in partnership with Marketing and Insights.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the global product brand equity of new and existing products as well as actively seeking out new trends, innovation and opportunities in partnership with BD that will provide growth to the R+F business. The Senior Director will be accountable for creating and driving a culture of collaboration, transparency and high performance across R+F PD, while fostering a strong partnership with cross functional and external partners.
The Senior Director, Product Development will have 2 direct reports and a team of 8. This position reports to the VP, Product Development and Packaging.
Additional Responsibilities
-Strategically create and manage a 5-year product development calendar consisting of skincare innovation, product reformulations/upgrades, portfolio additions, adjacencies and global market product requirements.
-Ideate, conceptualize and develop innovative products and compelling claims based on deep understanding of global consumer trends, competition and market demand.
-Lead exploration and new product development of core skincare regimens, enhancements and adjacency categories.
-Partner with BD and Insights on M&A and adjacency opportunities
-Partner with Marketing, L&D and SRCA to develop product training materials, Q&As and ensure content is clear and accurate based on product efficacy claims, testing and regulatory requirements.
-Provide technical feasibility and “story-telling” for new product concepts, positioning and technology including clearly articulating derm need and derm benefits
-Remain relentlessly up-to-date on emerging and future trends across all relevant industries and investigate new disruptive concepts to identify R+F opportunities
-Recruit, develop and lead new product development team; ensure cross-training and building of knowledge and expertise while guiding and assisting team in overcoming hurdles.
-Work closely with internal organizations such as Research and Innovation, Marketing, Operations, Insights and Field Development and with outside entities such as manufacturers, formulators and market researchers to seamlessly integrate product development into business operations.
-Collaborate with PMO (Project Management Organization) to ensure all timelines are developed and up to date, project status communicated to stakeholders, and risks and dependencies highlighted
-In collaboration with Business Development and Research and Innovation ensure all products, new and existing, contain technology that produces safe, effective and demonstrably superior product profiles.
-Actively participate in consumer and trade organizations to ensure R+F stays at the forefront of industry events.
Knowledge & Experience
-Minimum 12 years (including at a senior level) of product development/brand management experience in skincare, cosmetics, or topical dermatology
-Minimum 8 years management experience in leading PD teams
-Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred
-Experience in consistently launching high-quality, consumer-focused skincare products
-Able to align all product development activities to the DNA of the brand and possess a very high standard for product efficacy, quality and safety
-Creativity and knowledge in all areas of product development including the ability to conceptualize, develop and implement innovative product development programs
-Experience in actively and successfully collaborating with marketing, operations, sales, quality, regulatory, clinical affairs and research and development departments
-Deep understanding of consumer behavior and competitive landscape, identifying market opportunities and championing strategies for growth
-Energetic, self-motivated, and the ability to act with a sense of urgency, intensity and integrity.
-Experience in global market development including Asia and Europe
-Outstanding oral and written communication, strong presentation skills, and the ability to set priorities and maintain organization as well as successfully drive others to complete priorities
-Strategic thinker, skilled in formulating a range of options, risk assessment and analysis
-Able to identify and clearly communicate key risks and make timely, sound strategic judgments in uncertain situations
-Highly self-motivated and directed with the confidence to be able to discern how and when to champion their ideas
-Ability to coach and mentor a team and be a change champion
