Job Purpose
Lead and direct the Fuel Operations and Fuel Supply teams to manage all commercial aspects of the fuel supply chain, making investment and management decisions on hundreds of millions of dollars of working capital and billions of dollars of infrastructure, constantly minimizing expense by optimizing five lines of business: fuel expense, fuel taxes, transportation of fuel to airports, fueling services on airport, and consortium/infrastructure (M&O) for mainline, wholly-owned, and non-wholly owned regional airlines
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Create a dynamic, challenging, and intellectually rewarding work environment to keep talented and experienced professionals engaged in a unique niche within the airline and develop staff to ensure continuity
• Coordinate with all levels of management and staff of other departments to ensure that operational fuel related processes remain effective and efficient, specifically with airport customer service, corporate real estate, fuels engineering/quality assurance, safety/environmental compliance, international and regional operations control centers, auditing, government affairs, and training
• Maintain and develop productive relationships with fuel suppliers, ground handlers, consortia service providers, pipelines, terminals, and airports
• Direct planning, negotiating, financing, and investment related to industry infrastructure to ensure the security and efficiency of the fuel supply chain
• Work with the Senior Manager – Fuel Finance to 1) develop company budget for all lines of business except fuel taxes; 2) investigate and explain variances versus budget/forecast; 3) work with fuel accounting to validate invoices and ensure proper authorization for consortium / into plane contracts; 4) provide inputs to the cash forecast for bulk / self-supply purchases
• Lead and participate in energy related industry initiatives with domestic and international associations
• Minimize fuel related expenditures by leading a continual optimization of self-supply capabilities and fuel inventories that requires direct engagement with traders, brokers, and other market players, including the prudent use of financial derivatives to manage exposures
• Buy and sell fuel in the spot markets, as necessary, to balance inventories, secure supply, and minimize expense
• Lead, coordinate, or participate in initiatives, settlement negotiations, or litigation with pipelines and their regulators. Maintain contact with in-house and external legal counsel on developments in rate protests and/or Form 6 complaints.
• 24/7 on call for fuel emergencies and shortages
• Requires travel up to 10% of the time
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Business or Finance with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Procurement, Logistics, or Accounting, or the equivalent experience
• 7 years of petroleum management experience in logistics, refining, trading, or marketing; or 5 years within an airline fuel department
• 3 years of experience managing professional oriented staff
• Proven self-motivated results orientation with patience, perseverance, humility, and diplomacy
Preferred Qualifications
• Negotiating and contracting experience
• Experience managing airport fuel operations including board level participation within a major U.S. fuel consortium
• Financial derivatives, capital markets, or commodity trading and/or analytical experience
• Self-starter with executive presence and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively involving multiple departments and/or companies
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Commitment to quality and pride in work, patience, perseverance, diplomacy
• Excellent ability to proactively and effectively communicate with all levels of management both verbally and written
• Strong attention to detail with constant desire to learn and improve
• Analytical thinking abilities to understand and manage complex processes and multiple undeveloped data sources
• Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively in diverse situations
• Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
