Senior Director, JRD Business Operations & Infrastructure Strategy
The Senior Director, JRD Business Operations & Infrastructure Strategy will serve as a key advisor to the Global Head, Janssen R&D (JRD) Strategy and will serve as a key partner for the overall strategic and operational responsibility for the JRD Strategy and Operations team and the entire R&D SLT. JRD is an organization of 11,000+ people with an operating budget of $7B, which includes JRD Therapeutic Areas (Cardiovascular/Metabolism, Immunology, Infectious Diseases/Vaccines, Neuroscience, Oncology, Pulmonary Hypertension) and JRD Global Functions. Senior Director, JRD Business Operations & Infrastructure Strategy will partner to evaluate JRD current strategy, shape future strategy and align for execution and implementation.
Specifically, the Senior Director, JRD Business Operations & Infrastructure Strategy will focus on developing a global strategy and delivering operational excellence related to our global R&D infrastructure footprint and other major investments. This will include working across the R&D SLT to effectively optimize our current R&D footprint as well as manage the potential development of new R&D facilities globally. In addition, this individual will lead efforts to develop cross-R&D strategies in areas of significant internal and/or external R&D investments. This individual will shape our culture and will also help the Janssen R&D organization live into our Credo by ensuring a positive environment for our employees and having a positive connection with our communities.
• Work closely with the Global Head, Janssen R&D Strategy, Head R&D Strategic Initiatives, Sr. Dir R&D Strategy and Operations and the entire R&D Strategy and Operations team to develop and deliver the long term Pharm R&D strategy, and expertly partner to implement key business operations and infrastructure strategic initiatives across the R&D organization.
• Demonstrate strong leadership by working independently through the matrix to deliver on the Strategy and Operations team priorities as well as potentially managing direct reports.
• Develop and execute on a strategy related to our global R&D infrastructure footprint and other major R&D investments. This will include working across the R&D SLT to effectively manage our current R&D footprint as well as manage the potential development of new R&D facilities globally. In addition, this individual will lead efforts to develop cross-R&D strategies in areas of significant internal and/or external R&D investments.
• Interact regularly with Janssen R&D Senior Leadership team members, Janssen Group Operating Committee (GOC) member, and other Janssen and J&J senior leadership to ensure the organizational strategy is expertly executed. Regularly interact with members of the Janssen GOC and J&J Senior Executives on strategic activities.
• Contribute strategic input and operational expertise to R&D management reviews, including scenario development, trade-off implications and the evaluation/assessment of capital investment opportunities. Make timely decisions and balance short-term needs with longer term strategic impact. Motivate, inspire and influence others across the organization and enterprise to achieve results.
• Ensure clear and consistent decision-making and communication of the Janssen R&D strategy to multiple Janssen and J&J organizations and committees, ensure alignment with Janssen One and the Enterprise Strategy. Integrate input from functions in Janssen and J&J outside of R&D: Discovery and Product Development Sciences, Therapeutic Areas, GCSO, Global Clinical Development Operations, PMO, Finance, Global External Innovation, and others. Consolidate input from across the therapeutic areas and functional areas to ensure that all views are represented.
• Gain and incorporate deep external insights on the long-term view of healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry. Expertly manage and interact with external entities such as management consulting firms and subject matter experts.
• Develop, coach and engages in direct reports, and build a collaborative matrix teams.
Qualifications
• A minimum of PhD, MD, PharmD or equivalent doctoral degree is required
• A Minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical R&D environment, or similar
• Experience leading change initiatives in an R&D organization(s) is required
• Significant experience working in multiple R&D facilities is preferred
• Significant experience working on detailed strategic business cases and project valuations is preferred
• Significant experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in the analysis and synthesis of complex data towards the goal of building and executing on key strategies is required
• Strong knowledge of the drug discovery and development process required
• Demonstrated ability to lead others through direct reporting and/or matrix to deliver outstanding results
• Ability to translate data into information and strategies into executable action plans
• Travel requirement of 25% domestic and global
