Overview
This position establishes, implements, and ensures the effectiveness of LIXIL Water Technology Americas’ (LWTA) comprehensive environment, health, safety (EHS) and sustainability, programs at all LWTA sites in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. Working collaboratively with all functional areas and closely with Operations, the Senior Director ensures compliance with all applicable EHS regulatory requirements, minimizes the risk of impacts to the business through adverse EHS events, and realizes Sustainability opportunities at LWTA.
Responsibilities
• Develops and implements environmental health & safety compliance programs and policies as well as coordinates and/or delivers training for all Operations facilities and their applicable staff. Continues the work to obtain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification for all manufacturing and distribution sites.
• Provides technical direction and guidance to plant managers and all facility-level EHS staff and other key staff regarding compliance for all workplace conditions/hazards as well as all air, water, and waste requirements and regulations that apply to their facilities/operations.
• Measures, analyzes, evaluates, reports and communicates both leading and lagging Key Process Indicators to LWTA senior management as well as to LIXIL Corporation. Continues the full implementation of LWTA’s new EHS Information System.
• Develops and implements accident prevention and loss control methods and programs at Operations facilities to improve safety performance. Improves the existing crisis/emergency planning and response processes and plans at the Operating sites.
• Directs all environmental permitting activities; including program permits (surface, groundwater, storm water and air emission permits) and preparation and filing of environmental reports.
• Directs all relationships and communications with regulatory agencies. Negotiates all enforcement actions, notices of violation, informal settlement agreements, administrative orders and permit agreements with government environmental and occupational health and safety agencies.
• Coordinates loss control programs, risk engineering, and fire protection planning for Operations facilities and with the company's insurance providers.
• Assesses the impact of environmental health & safety laws and regulations as they affect the company and its operations and ensure effective compliance strategies.
• Formulates and implements policies, procedures and programs for compliance. Directs environmental due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, divestitures, site expansions and/or redevelopments.
• Advises senior management on the compliance status costs and technical improvements needed to achieve compliance and sustainability goals. Establishes and manages the EHS and Sustainability budgets.
• Develops and implements facility-level environmental health & safety auditing and inspection programs for all Operations facilities.
• Directs LWTA’s Sustainability Program to include:
◦ Co-chairs the LWTA Sustainability Steering Committee which sets Sustainability Policy for LWTA.
◦ Aligns LWTA’s Sustainability Program with that of the LIXIL Corporation.
◦ Establishes sustainability strategy, goals (particularly for CO2 emission reduction, water use reduction and waste minimization) and projects to meet goals. Tracks progress against goals and reports to key stakeholders to include LWTA management and LIXIL Corporation.
◦ Directs LWTA’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and Health Product Declaration (HPD) Program, working in concert with LWTA engineering and product management, to develop EPDs and HPDs for key products.
◦ Continues the implementation of a sustainability-focused scorecard in the stage-gate product development process.
Qualifications
• Education: Bachelors in Engineering or related subject required, Master’s Degree preferred.
• Years of Related Experience: Minimum of 15 years of related experience.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, governmental regulations, laws and legal documents.
• Ability to comprehend highly technical biological, chemical, physical, engineering and other such information.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions (sound understanding of the scientific method).
• Possess advanced mathematical and statistical skills and abilities.
• Good communication skills including a high level of competency in writing and speaking skills. English and Spanish language skills are preferred.
