The Associate Scientific Director in Biophysics will have strong scientific, managerial, and leadership skills suited for an entrepreneurial environment. They will develop, lead, and manage new methods and techniques and employ established biophysical methods to characterize the quality of bispecific monoclonal antibodies and other therapeutic biologics for in vivo use that meet the target molecular profile for a given therapeutic indication. One key objective for this position is to use biophysics to predict and determine the quality of monoclonal antibodies in addition to next generation biologics like multi-specific antibodies and CAR-T cells.
The Biophysics Group within Janssen Biotherapeutics (JBIO) develops and employs methods to assess biophysical characteristics of biotherapeutics such as binding affinity, solubility, intact primary structure and molecular stability, post-translational modification risks, concentratability, blood/serum compatibility, thermal/chemical/pH stress, purifiability, aggregation potential, intact molecular weight determination, peptide mapping, and post-translational modifications by mass spectrometry.
The Associate Scientific Director will ensure that methods used are state of the art and optimal for testing pipeline assets. This position will be responsible for a team that is charged with the characterization of multi-specific biologics from Lead Generation that continues through Lead Optimization and Protein Expression, culminating in the final determination of the biophysical and structural quality of clinical candidates entering the development portfolio. The Associate Scientific Director is expected to have the scientific depth and vision to lead a team in the design, conduct, and analysis of the results of experiments intended to characterize therapeutic proteins in terms of various biophysical techniques such as dynamic light scattering, static light scattering, calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, analytical ultracentrifugation, mass spectrometry, chromatography and other methods.
The Associate Scientific Director will contribute to other business critical initiatives such as serving as a project leader for therapeutic programs within JBIO and participating in the development of new therapeutic concepts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Knowledge of a broad array of biophysical methods and techniques utilized to characterize next generation biologics including multi-specific antibodies and other therapeutic proteins using biophysical techniques
• Function as a JBIO Team Leader
• Lead and supervise experimental approaches for elucidating key biophysical properties to assure high quality biologics are developed
• Communicate strategy and results to program teams and management
• Mentor and develop junior group members in their scientific and professional development
Qualifications
• Ph.D. with at least 10 years of scientific and leadership experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry is required
• Experience managing and leading highly motivated groups in the characterization of therapeutic proteins and antibodies is required
• Experience using a broad array of biophysical, formulation, and stability experiments is required
• Expert knowledge in at least one or more of the following techniques: SEC, AUC, DSC, light scattering, SPR, mass spectrometry, or HPLC is preferred
• Strong skills as an innovator as demonstrated by publications or patents is required
• Good written and oral communication skills is required
• Record of success working in a matrix environment is required
• Possess an unparalleled work ethic with tremendous motivation to drive assigned projects and teams to a sound scientific conclusion is required
