Job Description
We are currently seeking a highly qualified Director, Policy Analysis & Legislative Research to join our Government Affairs department in Washington DC. The successful candidate will lead the development of policy positions and advocacy materials in support of federal, state and local government affairs activities. In addition, the candidate will work to develop relationships with external policy groups and educate the organizations on key company issues.
Specific accountabilities include:
• Leading a three person team in the development of policy positions, analysis, argumentation, and advocacy materials to help Government Affairs achieve its legislative objectives at the federal, state & local levels;
• Leading the function’s planning of legislative strategic plans, partnering with the company’s federal and state government affairs teams;
• Partnering with state government affairs, represent the company in external legislative engagements on critical policy positions, including tax policy positions.
• Working with external consultants and third party groups that specialize in tax policy, legislative and regulatory outlook, and state fiscal situations/practices;
• Developing strategic relationships with key external public policy and public health groups. Educates the assigned groups on the company's issues and acts as the key point of contact with the organizations;
• Leading government affairs support and input into the company’s annual planning, risk management and quarterly earnings process.
Specific Skills
Qualifications include:
• Bachelor’s degree and a strong preference for advanced degree in law, political science, economics, and/or public policy;
• 7+ years of relevant work experience preferably with a public policy organization, trade association, corporation and/or elected officials;
• Strong analytical skills and must be able to find creative solutions to complex problems;
• Excellent communications skills (written, interpersonal & presentation) as applied to a broad variety of stakeholders (i.e. elected officials, policy groups, business partners, consumers, etc.);
• Strategic thinking and ability to translate strategic goals into actionable plans and processes as well as ability to integrate large amounts of information into meaningful analysis;
• Strong working knowledge of government affairs, public policy and legislative activity;
• Ability to influence without authority and building strategic collaborative partnerships; and
• Must work well in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and be able to manage multiple projects with varying timelines
